The Niedersachsendamm is a central access road in Bremen , Neustadt district, Huckelriede district. It leads in a south-north direction from Kornstrasse to the dike on Werdersee .

The cross streets and the connecting streets were named u. a. as Kornstraße after a field name with a lot of grain cultivation, Hinterm Sielhof 1970 after a field name, Huckelriede after Huckel as hilly and Riede as a swampy lowland, habenhauser Landstraße after the district, Buntentorsdeich after the dike in the district, Werderhöhe after a height with a view of the Werder between Weser and Kleiner Weser , unnamed street, Sophie-Germain- Strasse 2002 after the French mathematician (1776–1831), unnamed street; otherwise see the link to the streets.

Surname

The Niedersachsendamm was named after an inner dike in front of Südervorstadt and after the state of Lower Saxony .

Huckelriede developed east of the Kornstraße through an older building structure. A small park became the third oldest green space in Bremen.
From 1935 a residential area was built on Ouerstraße Huckelriede. During the construction of the habenhauser dyke , a section of the dyke was moved forward and straightened. The Cambrai barracks , the Hindenburg barracks and the Scharnhorst barracks were built in 1935/36 on the building land on Niedersachsendamm obtained in this way .

The Werdersee was laid out from 1953 to 1960 and enlarged between 1981 and 1987 in the flood channel of the Kleine Weser .

The Police of the City of Bremen has since 1951 in the former Hindenburg barracks a location for the riot police with first one, then two applications Hundreds. The Scharnhorst barracks are used by the Bundeswehr .

Since 1948, the Roland Clinic has been built in various stages on the former barracks site. Initially there were 60 beds, today (2019) there are 160.
New residential areas on Buntentorsdeich on Werdersee were created on a former industrial estate.

Huckelriede became known through the Gladbeck hostage drama in the summer of 1988. A public bus was kidnapped by hostage-takers at the bus station at Niedersachsendamm. In the further course of the crime three people were killed. As a reminder, a stele with the names of the victims was placed on the green strip of the bus station in 2019 .

According to plans from 2010 (Freiraum WES Hamburg), from 2012 the area of Niedersachsendamm-Nord on the district axis of Niedersachsendamm near the former barracks for residential purposes was further developed.

In 1880 the first horse-drawn tram line was opened in Neustadt. It drove from the market over the Great Weser Bridge to Kirchweg, from 1884 past Niedersachsendamm to Arsterdamm . The line was electrified in 1900.

The Bremen tram goes south through the street with line 4, which leads from Lilienthal / Falkenberg to Arsten (before 1998 line 1).
In local transport in Bremen the bus routes 26 ( Überseestadt ↔ Huckelriede), 27 (Weidedamm-Nord ↔ Huckelriede), 51 (Huckelriede ↔ Kattenturm) and 53 (Huckelriede ↔ Brinkum-Nord) as well as to the surrounding area the lines 101 (to Bassum ), 102 (after Syke ), 120/121 (after Kirchweyhe ), 226 (after Wildeshausen ) and 750 (after Thedinghausen ).
