The Nihon Keizai Shimbun ( Japanese 日本 経 済 新聞 , lettering as the company logo in Kyūjitai : 日本 經濟 新聞 , German "Japanese business newspaper"), mostly abbreviated as Nikkei , is a national and international edition Japanese daily newspaper with a circulation of around 3 million. This puts it in fourth place behind the Yomiuri Shimbun , the Asahi Shimbun and the Mainichi Shimbun . The Nikkei is particularly popular with high earners and university graduates; It ranks first in Japan in terms of both the average income of subscribers and the proportion of academics. Like the other major daily newspapers in Japan, the Nikkei has a morning and an evening edition. Her focus is on politics, business and stock market news.

The Nikkei was published in 1876 as Chūgai bukka shimpō sōkan ( 中外 物 価 新 報 創刊 , German "New newspaper for prices at home and abroad") by Mitsui Bussan . Since 1971 it has published the Nikkei share index ( Nikkei 225 ) ( 日 経 平均 株 価 , nikkei heikin kabuka ), which is calculated from the prices of selected companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange . In addition, other stock indices are published, including since October 1982 the Nikkei 300 , a capitalization-weighted index of important equity stocks that are traded in the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. At the beginning of 1982 this index had a value of 100.

Since April 2010, the operator has prohibited any internet links to the newspaper's website. Permission to link the main page will only be granted in exceptional cases after a detailed reason has been sent.

The Nikkei's most recent strategy is aimed at increasing its international presence. In 2014, Nikkei opened a new Asian headquarters in Bangkok and today has a network of 36 overseas offices with 230 employees. In Germany the company is represented in Berlin and Frankfurt, the European headquarters are in London. The Nikkei also has partnerships with a number of renowned international newspapers, including the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, which regularly translates and publishes Nikkei articles into German.
