description

tribe
leaves

The Nikko maple is a 10 to 12 meter high, dioecious tree with a flattened crown, gray bark and young shoots with densely brownish hairs up to the second year. The leaves are threefold, the leaflets are 7 to 14 centimeters long and 3 to 6 centimeters wide, thick, almost leathery, ovate to oblong-elliptical, pointed, with entire margins or with up to 10 teeth on each side, clearly notched. The middle leaflet is short stalked, the lateral leaflets are almost sessile. The top is dark gray-green, the bottom bluish white and shaggy hair. The petiole is 2 to 4 inches long and hairy densely brownish. The leaves emerge late and turn scarlet in autumn. The yellowish green, five-fold flowers are in groups of three in short-stalked, densely hairy clusters. They bloom in May. The yellowish-brown fruits are 3 to 4.5 centimeters long, thick and densely hairy with bristles. The wing is spread at right angles and strongly curved inwards. They ripen in September.

Distribution and ecology

The distribution area is on the Japanese islands of Honshū , Kyushu and Shikoku and in the Chinese provinces of Anhui , Hubei , Jiangxi and Zhejiang . The species grows at altitudes of 1000 to 1800 meters in cool, moist forests, on fresh to moist, well-drained, moderately nutrient-rich, acidic to neutral, sandy or gravelly humus soils in light to partially shaded locations. The species tolerates heat but is not frost hardy. It is sensitive to a higher calcium content.

Systematics and research history

It was first described in 1867 by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel in the Archives Neerlandaises des Sciences Exactes et Naturelles . A synonym that is also used in the Flora of China is Acer nikoense hort. non Maximowicz .

use

The species is rarely used as an ornamental wood because of its impressive autumn colors .
