The Paltenbach , also just Palten , on the upper course also Niklbach , is a tributary of the Steyr near Molln in the southern Traunviertel in Upper Austria .

Run and landscape

The Paltenbach rises at the northern foot of the Hohe Nock of the Sengsengebirge , in the area of the Feichtaualm, below the Feichtauhütte at about 1340  m above sea level. A. . To the south above are the Feichtau lakes , two cirque lakes that have no surface drainage. The upper course is also called Niklbach and is located in the Kalkalpen National Park .

The Paltenbach runs west, then northwards around the Ramsauer Großestenberg , with the Sengsengebirgskamm and the northern foothills of the Spitzberg on the left bank. Here is a military training area ( Ramsau-Molln shooting range ), the Hopfing houses , and then in a cauldron Ramsau am Bach. To the north-west of the latter there is an inconspicuous valley pass to the Mollnerbach , the Paltenbach bends westward again and flows between Spitzberg and Eibling . In this widening are Dorngraben , the place Palten and, a little further away, Forsthub .

Then it turns north-west again, has a gorge, and flows into the Steyr after about 15½ kilometers at Göritz , in the narrow valley of the Steyr breakthrough .

history

The name is documented in 1366, as a body of water or field name in the Palten and is related to a reconstructed ancient Slavic root * balta ' swamp , moor '. The Paltenmühl can be found in the Ramsau, not at the current place of the name.

The brook has good water supply and was one of the more important works brooks on the upper Steyr.
