The Hohe Nock is a karstified plateau mountain in south-eastern Upper Austria . With a height of 1963  m above sea level. A. it towers over the Windischgarstner Basin to the south by around 1400 meters and forms the highest elevation of the Sengsengebirge and the entire Upper Austrian Pre-Alps . The mountain lies in the central area of the Kalkalpen National Park, established in 1997 .

Location and structure

The Hohe Nock rises in the municipal areas of Molln , Roßleithen and Rosenau am Hengstpaß in the Kirchdorf an der Krems district . The closest valley locations are Molln in the north and Windischgarsten in the south . The mountain stock is made up primarily of light Wetterstein limestone from the Ladinian to Lower Carnian , and in deeper areas also of main dolomite .

The oronym Nock indicates the highest elevation of a flattened mountain top, the Nockplateau. This is a plateau crossed by large sinkholes , which suddenly plunges north into several hundred meters high rock faces into the Blöttenbachtal. At the end of the valley there is the Feichtau, the largest alpine pasture area of the Sengsengebirge ( 1360  m ) and the Feichtau lakes ( 1370  m ).

To the south, the Hohe Nock sinks with smaller rock breaks into a wide basin of the Upper Knödelboden (around 1450  m ), which is limited by the upstream Hagler ( 1669  m ). The Merkensteinbründl ( Lage ) is one of the rare water sources in the Sengsengebirge. To the east the mountain range continues over the Rettenbacher Höhe saddle ( 1779  m ) to the Gamsplan ( 1902  m ), to the west the Rottalsattel (around 1650  m ) forms the connection to the Rohrauer Großestenberg and on to the Hochsengs ( 1838  m ).

Tourist development

The Hohe Nock is one of the most popular destinations in the Kalkalpen National Park for mountain hikers and can be reached on several marked climbs with at least 1400 meters of altitude to be overcome. The most popular ascent leads from the north from the Krummen Steyrling valley over the Feichtau, where you can stop and stay overnight, through a Schuttkar to the Nock plateau and to the summit. From the south, the Brudergrabensteig runs from the Hinteren Rettenbachtal to the Obere Knödelboden and from there over the Rettenbacher Höhe to the summit ridge. As part of the two-day crossing of the Sensgen Mountains, you reach the Nock plateau via the Rottalsattel.

Climbers in particular commit routes on the Nockplatte , an eye-catching, roughly 180 meters high, steeply inclined plate located at the southwestern end of the Nockplateau. The most popular route is the record euphoria ( 5+ ).
