Nikolai Andreevich Gwosdezki

Nikolai Andreyevich Gwosdezki ( Russian Николай Андреевич Гвоздецкий ; born December 2 . Jul / 15. December  1913 greg. In St. Petersburg ; † 10. October 1994 in Moscow ) was a Russian geographer and university professor .

Life

Gwosdezki was the son of an agronomist and a teacher. He graduated from secondary school and music school in Ivanovo . In 1932 he began studying at the Moscow State University (MGU) in the Geography Department of Soil Geography - Faculty with completion in 1938. This was followed by postgraduate study at the Research Institute of Geography at Moscow State University. During the German-Soviet War he was a soldier in the Red Army .

After demobilization in 1946, Gwosdezki became a lecturer at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute . In 1949 he received his doctorate in geographic sciences . In 1951 he was appointed professor.

In 1959 Gwosdezki became head of the Department of Physical Geography of the USSR in the geography faculty of the MGU (until 1987). His main research interests were the problems of the Karst (more than 250 publications), landscape typing and cartography of mountain regions, especially the Caucasus and Central Asia, and the history of the geography of Russia .

Gwosdezki was at the Moscow vagankovo cemetery buried. A cave in the Karabi-Jaila Mountains in the Crimea , the most important caves in the Diwja Caves in the Urals near Perm and the Kulogorskaya Cave on the right bank of the Pinega were named after him.
