Nikolai Karlowitsch Reitzenstein ( Russian: Николай Карлович Рейценштейн ; * August 7, 1854 in Saint Petersburg ; † November 27, 1916 there ) was a Russian naval officer , most recently an admiral , and from 1909 to 1916 a member of the admiralty council of the Imperial Russian Navy .

Life

Reitzenstein was born the son of a court advisor to the Tsar .

In September 1870 he joined the Marine Cadet Corps , from which he was removed in March 1874 with the rank of sea ​​cadet . After Reitzenstein was accepted into the service of the Russian fleet in April 1874, he reached the rank of Mitschman in September 1875 . After completing a training class for mine officers from 1876 to 1877, he was promoted to mine officer of the 1st category and took on the role of mine officer on the sailing ship Dschigit . In 1880 Reitzenstein was appointed lieutenant at sea , in 1882 he was given command of the torpedo boat destroyer Tschaika , in 1882 he became a mine officer on the frigate Knjas Poscharsky , in 1883 he took over command of the torpedo boat destroyer Raketa . In 1885 Reitzenstein became a mining officer for the cruiser Admiral Kornilow .

After Reitzenstein had served as a mine officer under Vice Admiral W. P. Schmidt in the staff of the squadron chief of the Pacific Fleet from 1886 , he was given command of the torpedo boat destroyer Narwa in the Baltic States in 1889 .

In 1890 he was appointed chairman of the examination committee for mine and torpedo technology. In 1891 he was promoted to captain 2nd rank , from 1891–1895 he was first officer of the Rasbojnik clipper , then from 1895 he commanded the Jersch gunboat . Also in 1895 Reitzenstein was appointed chief mine officer of the staff of the commander of the Baltic Fleet and took command of the transport ship Ewropa from 1895 to 1898 . In 1899 he was the commissioner of the naval technical committee at the armaments supplier Krupp in Germany and was promoted to captain 1st rank .

During the construction of the cruiser Askold in the years 1900-1904 years Reitzenstein was used as an observer before he became the ship's first in command.

On January 16, 1904, he was appointed commander of the cruiser association in Vladivostok before taking command of the cruiser association in Port Arthur on March 17 . Reitzenstein was raised to the rank of rear admiral on July 12, 1904 , when he commanded the breakthrough of the cruiser association from Port Artur in the Battle of the Yellow Sea . After the battle he ran with the badly damaged Askold to Shanghai , China , where the ship and crew were interned until the peace agreement with Japan in 1906.

From 1907–1909 Reitzenstein headed the artillery training department of the Baltic Fleet , and in 1909 he was appointed Vice Admiral .

1910–1912 he headed the special committee for the organization of the Amur fleet , 1912–1916 he chaired the special committee for the organization of coastal defense.

On April 14, 1913 Reitzenstein received the rank of admiral , at the end of 1915 he became a member of the Admiralty Council of the Navy Ministry .

He retired on June 21, 1916 for reasons of age.

Nikolai Karlowitsch Reitzenstein died on November 27, 1916 in Saint Petersburg, which was renamed Petrograd after the German Reich declared war on the Russian Empire. He was buried in the Novodevichy cemetery there .
