Nikolai von Schoepff (born December 3, 1959 in Munich ) is a German diplomat and has been ambassador to Latvia since August 2019 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1981, von Schoepff studied history between 1982 and 1988 at the University of Passau , Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , Lomonossow University , Free University of Berlin and the University of London and graduated in 1988 with a Magister Artium (MA) from the Free University University of Berlin. He then completed postgraduate studies at St Antony's College at the University of Oxford , graduating in 1989 with a Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) And was then between 1990 and 1991 a research associate in the Eastern Committee of German Business at the Federation of Germans Industry (BDI).

After completing this activity, von Schoepff completed the preparatory service for the senior foreign service between 1991 and 1993 and was temporarily employed in the Federal Chancellery . After passing the career examination, he became head of the legal and consular department at the Embassy in Ukraine in 1993 and then worked in the Political Department of the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City between 1996 and 1997 .

After a subsequent activity from 1997 to 1999 as head of the economic service at the embassy in Romania , von Schoepff found employment in the Foreign Office in Berlin , where he was most recently deputy head of department for fundamental questions of European policy between 2003 and 2005 . He was then head of the political department at the embassy in Russia from 2005 to 2008 before becoming head of the nuclear arms control division in the Federal Foreign Office.

From 2011 to 2014 Nikolai von Schoepff succeeded Klaus-Peter Brandes , who in turn became ambassador to Tanzania , and ambassador to the United Arab Emirates . From 2014 to 2017 he was ambassador to Cyprus .

After two years at Germany Trade and Invest as a diplomatic advisor, von Schoepff moved to the embassy in Latvia in August 2019 as the successor to Rolf Schütte .
