The Nikolaikirche in Pasewalk in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district is the largest stone church in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern .

History and affiliation

The church was first mentioned in 1177 and is therefore the oldest town church in Pasewalk. An annex was built on the north and south sides over the centuries . After being destroyed several times, it was rebuilt as a Gothic brick building. It also received the cross wing still existing today on the north and south sides. In 1615 the church tower was added in the Renaissance style and the structure was expanded to form a three-aisled church. In the years 1824 to 1828, neo-Gothic renovations were carried out with the help of Karl Friedrich Schinkel . During this time the church received an organ from August Wilhelm Grüneberg with two manuals, on which Carl Friedrich Ferdinand Buckow worked as a journeyman. During the Second World War , the church was badly damaged and rebuilt.

The Protestant parish Pasewalk, Dargitz and Stolzenburg belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

architecture

The building was built as a rectangular, four- bay cruciform church made of evenly hewn field stones . The transversely rectangular tower is around 29.7 meters high and has had a simple pointed roof since it was last damaged in World War II . The gables are with aperture of bricks decorated. At the height of the eaves there are two coupled ogival openings on three sides, above which are coupled round arched sound arcades . The choir is laid out in a rectangular shape and has only one domed, pointed arched window on its east side. The gable is provided with panels. The northern extension has a four-way stepped, brick-edged, pointed arch-shaped gate that was installed asymmetrically to the left. Above each there are two pointed arched windows, walled up with irregular stones and grit. A smaller, pointed arch-shaped tracery window has been preserved in between. Above there are four smaller arched windows that are also walled up. The gable is structured with bricks arranged in a cross, into which three small windows are let. On the southern wall of the annex there is only one of three windows, which has also been reduced in size.

Interior decoration

The central nave, like the vestibule, has a star vault , while the side aisles have cross ribbed vaults. The altar shows a painting of the Risen One by August Remy .
