Nikolaus Baur

Nikolaus Baur , also Nicolaus Baur , (born November 6, 1816 in Trier , † October 2, 1879 in Munich ) was a German history painter from the Düsseldorf and Munich Schools .

Life

Nicolaus Baur, son of a blacksmith from Trier, studied painting from 1837 to 1840 in Carl Ferdinand Sohn's antique hall at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In 1849 he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , became a student of Joseph Schlotthauer , among others , and graduated in 1851 with a degree. From 1860 he was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art . His grave is in the old northern cemetery in Munich .

In addition to his frescoes with religious compositions in churches in and outside Munich, Nikolaus Baur made a name for himself with mythological and historical scenes and portraits . By commissioning a portrait of King Maximilian II , Baur was commissioned to create two wall paintings for the Bavarian National Museum on Prinzregentenstrasse in Munich, now in the museum building .
