Nicholas II of Pentz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolaus II von Pentz († January 5, 1482 ) was canon in Schwerin from 1449–1479 , provost in the Premonstratensian monastery of Rehna from 1455 to 1474 and bishop in the diocese of Schwerin from 1479 to 1482 .

Life

On March 13, 1479, the canon and thesaurus of the Schwerin cathedral chapter, Nikolaus II von Pentz, was elected the new bishop of Schwerin by the cathedral chapter. Nikolaus von Pentz came from the Mecklenburg noble family of the same name . There is little verifiable information about his parents, his youth and his education. He could have been the son of the knight Ulrich IV from the Redefin family. Nikolaus Pentz can be found in May 1445 as a student at the University of Rostock , where he received his doctorate in 1446 as a baccalaureus . As a witness he was mentioned in a document in 1449 as a canon of the Schwerin cathedral chapter. On November 11, 1455, Nikolaus von Pentz also appears in a document as provost of the Premonstratensian monastery in Rehna. He held this office for almost twenty years, evidently to the satisfaction of both the nuns themselves, who had elected him, and the clergy and secular authorities. On December 28, 1474 he was attested there as a monastery provost. At that time from 1474 to 1479 he was also a thesaurus in the Schwerin cathedral chapter.

It is not known whether Duke Balthasar, as a temporarily postulated administrator in the Schwerin diocese, prompted Nikolaus von Pentz to be appointed thesaurary in the cathedral chapter. After all, after Duke Balthasar left the clergy on February 16, 1479, he went back to the Premonstratensian monastery in Rehna for a short time.

June 4, 1479 should be seen as the day of his papal confirmation. On September 10th, the cathedral chapter gave him a court in Schwerin. But it was not until January 6, 1480 that Nicolaus, van godes gnaden electus vnde confirmatus of the kerken to Swerin, issued invitations from his castle in Bützow to participate in his coronation ceremony scheduled for the day of Dorotheae (February 6) . Sunday, February 6, 1480, is to be regarded as the day of the episcopal ordination .

Bishop Nikolaus was honored both as a former Rehna monastery provost and as a bishop. He ruled the church calmly (ecclesiam traquille gubernavit) and, although neither increased nor decreased its wealth. Even during his brief reign, there was little opportunity for great deeds. On August 29, 1481 he revoked a contract with the citizens of Wismar because of the chapel of St. Cross in the churchyard of Alt-Wismar. After an upset with Duke Magnus II , there was a bond of 1000 Rhenish guilders. This undertaking was only fulfilled a few years later by his successor in office, Bishop Konrad Loste .

Bishop Nikolaus died as a result of a stroke in early 1482 and was buried in the collegiate church in Bützow .

seal

Nikolaus II von Pentz had a ring seal with the Pent'schen lion as heraldic animal.

The episcopal seal shows the Mother of God with the baby Jesus, hidden below by two shields, on the right the episcopal, on the left the Pentz'schen with a bishop's staff behind the lion peeking out.

The inscription reads: S 'NICOLAI EPI SWERIN.

The round bishop's seal the size of a thaler on a red plate hangs on the original document issued in Bützow on August 29, 1481, which is said to be in the Wismar Council Archives, today's city archives of the Hanseatic city.

A picture of Nicholas II, still as a canon, has been preserved on the predella of the former high altar of the Rehna monastery church, which was acquired when he was provost of the Premonstratensian monastery.
