Nikolaus Wolcz

Nikolaus Wolcz , also Niky or Nicky Wolcz , (born January 8, 1944 in Timișoara , Kingdom of Romania ) is a Banat German actor , director and choreographer .

Life

Wolcz studied acting at the Bucharest Theater Academy , which he graduated from in 1966, and has worked as an actor, teacher, director and choreographer all over Europe.

In 1996 he went to Columbia University in New York , where he staged productions of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night , Bertolt Brecht's The Caucasian Chalk Circle (directed together with Andrei Serban ), The Bald Singer by Eugène Ionesco and Carlo Gozzis Turandot (directed together with his wife Ulla (Ursula) Wolcz, who also comes from Kronstadt , Transylvania ).

His directorial work in Europe, especially in the German-speaking area, includes Macbeth , Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot and Gustave Flaubert's The Temptation of St. Anthony .

As a music theater director, he has worked on productions of WA Mozart's Don Giovanni , Die Zauberflöte , Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's Il Campiello , Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème and Gaetano Donizetti's Roberto Devereux (again with Andrei Serban). In 2003 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera , New York City with his choreography for the production of Hector Berlioz ' Benvenuto Cellini . He choreographed Gounod's Faust at the Met in spring 2005.

Wolcz leads workshops on topics such as Commedia dell'arte , Biomechanics , Allegorical Theater and Dada Theater .

In 2005 he founded the experimental theater "Kuden" together with Ulla Wolcz and some former students from Columbia University.
