Nina Michailowna Demurowa ( Russian: Нина Михайловна Демурова ; born October 3, 1930 in the USSR ) is a Soviet - Russian literary scholar , English scholar , translator and university teacher .

Life

Demurowa studied at the Lomonossow University Moscow (MGU) in the Romance and German department of the Philological Faculty of English Language and Literature with a degree in 1953.

In the late 1950s Demurowa was working as a translator in India . In 1958 she successfully defended her dissertation on Chartist literary criticism at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute (MGPI) for her doctorate as a candidate in philological sciences.

Demurowa has taught English, modern English and American literature, and children's and youth literature at MGU and MGPI . She was the first to introduce children's and youth literature as a separate philological discipline. She is a prominent expert on the work of Lewis Carroll . Her translations of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Behind the Looking Glass are particularly recognized . She also translated works by GK Chesterton , Edgar Allan Poe , Charles Dickens , John D. MacDonald , Frances Hodgson Burnett , JM Barrie , Beatrix Potter , Jennifer Garner , RK Narayan , John Updike and others

In 1983 Demurova successfully defended her doctoral thesis on English children's and youth literature 1740-1870 for her doctorate in philological sciences.

Demurowa is an honorary member of the Lewis Carroll Society in London and the Lewis Carroll Society of North America and also the Beatrix Potter Society . In 2000 she received an Honorary Diploma from the Children's Book Council for her translation of The Life of Our Lord by Charles Dickens.
