Nirim

Nirim ( Hebrew נִירִים, "New Grazing Lands") is a kibbutz in the northwestern Negev in Israel . It is located near the border with the Gaza Strip , about seven kilometers east of Chan Yunis , and is administered by the Eshkol regional administration . The kibbutz has an area of 22 km² and in 2018 had a population of 363 people.

history

The kibbutz was formed in June 1946 as part of the eleven point plan to create a Jewish presence in the Negev with the aim of later claiming it as part of a future state of Israel . The name comes from the Nir Brigade of the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement . Some members of this brigade helped establish the kibbutz, which was initially established in an area called "Dangour" or "Old Nirim". In the wake of the outbreak of the Palestine War on May 15, 1948, the kibbutz was the first Jewish settlement to be attacked by the Egyptian armed forces at the Battle of Nirim . In the course of the battle, the Egyptian forces approached Nirim up to 25 meters before they were repulsed by the kibbutz defense, which consisted of only 39 fighters. Eight of the 39 fighters were killed during the battle and all of Nirim's houses were destroyed.

Nirim was used by the Israeli army as an outpost against the Egyptian forces for the remainder of the war . After the war, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed the area because of its strategic value. Since the kibbutzniks wanted to move north, beyond the precipitation line of 200 millimeters per year, the kibbutz was moved 15 kilometers to the northeast, to its current location near the historical synagogue at Horvot Maon . After the split in the Mapam Workers' Party in 1952, all supporters of Moshe Sneh were expelled from the kibbutz. Until 1956, Nirim was a constant target of attacks by fedayeen fighters from the Gaza Strip .

On August 9, 1959 , Israeli soldiers from Nirim raped a Bedouin girl they had captured nearby.

Since 2000, Nirim has again been targeted by Qassam rockets from the Gaza Strip . When Operation Cast Lead began in January 2009, most of Nirim's residents, along with those of other villages near the Gaza Strip, were evacuated . Many of the evacuated families were housed in kibbutz Mischmar HaEmek on the Jezreel plain until the end of the fighting .

Shortly before the start of the final ceasefire in Operation Protective Edge , Zeev Etzion, 55, and Shachar Melamed, 43, were killed in a kibbutz attack with mortar shells from the Gaza Strip at 6:00 p.m. local time on August 26, 2014. Four other people were injured.

Agriculture

Nirim produces organic peanuts, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots and other vegetables and exports them to Europe . The land cultivated by the farmers extends to the barricade around the Gaza Strip . After the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, the Israeli Defense Ministry decided to build a security strip around the barriers that ran through Nirim's agricultural area. Nirim had to contribute one million NIS from its compensation fund.
