Glycol dinitrate (also called glycol dinitrate ) is a chemical compound from the group of nitric acid esters .
Extraction and presentation
Ethylene glycol dinitrate, by nitration of ethylene glycol with mixed acid are obtained. On an industrial scale, this is carried out in a continuous process, similar to nitroglycerin .

Glycoldinitrate is a colorless, oily, not very volatile liquid, which is sparingly soluble in water and not hygroscopic . It is readily soluble in most organic solvents. The vapor pressures are relatively low at low temperatures.

Glycol dinitrate is an explosive liquid that reacts to impact, friction, heating or other ignition sources. Important explosion indicators are:

Glycol dinitrate is used as an explosive . Its effect is very similar to that of nitroglycerin. It is often used in a mixture with this, as it lowers its freezing point for use in winter.
Safety instructions / risk assessment
The pharmacological effects are similar to those of nitroglycerin , with severe headaches occurring when poisoned. Like all nitric acid esters, the compound places an intense strain on the circulation and is absorbed through the skin. The MAK value is 0.32 mg m −3 or 0.05 ppm.
In 2016, glycol dinitrate was included in the EU's ongoing action plan ( CoRAP ) in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) as part of substance evaluation . The effects of the substance on human health and the environment are re-evaluated and, if necessary, follow-up measures are initiated. The reasons for the uptake of glycol dinitrate were concerns regarding high (aggregated) tonnage and widespread use as well as the dangers arising from a possible assignment to the group of PBT / vPvB substances, the possible dangers due to reproductive toxicity and sensitizing properties and as a potential endocrine disruptor . The re-evaluation has been running since 2016 and is carried out by Italy . In order to be able to reach a final assessment, further information was requested.
