Njurundabommen (unofficially often Njurunda for short ) is a district of Kvissleby in the Swedish province of Västernorrlands län , in the historical province (landskap) Medelpad .

location

Njurundabommen belongs to the municipality of Sundsvall and within this, since January 1, 2016, to the district of Njurunda, named after the original name of the church village. It is located about 50 km as the crow flies southwest of the provincial capital Härnösand and about 15 km south of Sundsvall on the right bank of the Ljungan river , a few kilometers above its confluence with the Bottensee , and about 3 km south of the center of Kvissleby.

The former Njurunda station at kilometer 332 of the East Coast Railway (Ostkustbanan), which connects Stockholm with Sundsvall and was opened on this section in 1925, is out of service; the nearest train station with passenger traffic is thus Sundsvall. The new route of Europastraße 4 , which opened on this section in 2014, passes a little west of the town . The old route runs through the town as today's secondary provincial road Y 562.

history

The place, conveniently located on the trade route along the Baltic Sea coast, at the point where the Ljungan is crossed, has been known since the Middle Ages; it was first mentioned in 1344 as Nyurundum . A first church was built there early on, and it was the center of the parish that encompassed the entire area in the mouth of the Ljungan. Initially referred to as Njurunda , for today's central location near the church, the extension bommen was added, which refers to the turnpike (Swedish bom ), which was used there until 1897 to collect the bridge toll over the Ljungan.

Administratively, the place was initially the center of the parish of Njurunda socken , from which the rural community of the same name (landskommun) emerged in 1862 . This went on in 1974 in the municipality of Sundsvall.

Before 2015, Njurundabommen was an independent crime scene with the last population in 1983. Dingersjö, to the left (north) of Ljungan, where around a third of the population lived at the time, belonged to Njurundabommen before 1995, was then designated as an independent crime scene and also joined Kvissleby in 2015.

Attractions

The town's church was built in 1862–1865 based on a design by Johan Fredrik Åbom on the southern outskirts. Not far from the town center and the bridge over the Ljungan are the ruins of the medieval church from the 12th century.

Sports

The ice hockey club Njurunda SK , founded in 1971, comes from Njurundabommen and has been playing regularly in the third-highest Swedish league, today's Hockeyettan , since the 1999/2000 season . The Modin-Zetterberg-Hall of Njurundabommen is named after the famous players who began their career in the youth team of the club: Fredrik Modin and Henrik Zetterberg .
