from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Noah Sow is a German author, musician, label owner, activist, media critic, producer and artist who is intensively involved in various anti-racism projects .

Life

Noah Sow was born in Bavaria and grew up there. From 1990 to 2007 she worked as a radio presenter, producer and editor and worked for the channels 1 Live , hr3 , SWF3 , Radio Fritz and You FM as well as a TV presenter for HR and WDR television.

In 2001 she was a member of the jury for the casting show Popstars , but dropped out during the season because she no longer wanted to support the way she dealt with the candidates, which she considered to be an “impossible image of man”.

From 2001 to 2004 she lived in Brooklyn , New York, where she performed both with her own band and with the group "Anarchists of Color".

Journalistic activity

Noah Sow is chairwoman of the media-watch association, the brown mob , which she founded in Hamburg in 2001 , whose aim is “ that the representation of black people in the German media and the public takes place fairly and without discrimination. “In 2005, Augsburg Zoo was awarded a brown card because its African Village event is in direct tradition of the so-called“ Völkerschauen ”of the 19th century.

In 2000 she took part in the music project New Rock Conference , where the song Heal Yourself was created with numerous artists . The proceeds from the sale of the singles were donated to the Nordoff Robbins Foundation.

In 2003 the WDR broadcasted her radio play debut Underground , in which she took over the book, composition, production and the role of speaker. The audio and music production was carried out in collaboration with Jonathan Bepler in New York. Marc Hosemann , Lars Gärtner and Matthias Koeberlin, among others, played other speaking roles . In 2005, Noah Sow was portrayed in the documentary Black Germany (director: Oliver Hardt). In 2007 she read from the book Eichmann in Jerusalem for the audio book series of the campaign Laut gegen Nazis .

In June 2007, she and her then band Noah Sow & the Heimlich Maneuver released the single Esbrennt hier drin at Warner Music Group . The video for this was shot in the FC St. Pauli stadium . Noah Sow is no longer under contract with Warner. The debut album of her new band Noiseaux was released on September 18, 2009 as "Afropunk, Landeszentralpunk, post-whatever" on her own label Jeanne Dark Records and is entitled Out Now .

From 2008 to 2009 Noah Sow was a member of the group Sisters , with whom she appeared in the Bundesvision Song Contest 2008 in February 2008 and toured Germany and Senegal, including concerts with the WDR Big Band , the Cologne Philharmonic and Essen.

For the school television and teaching material format “Die Schulstunde als Talkshow” ( WDR and Federal Agency for Political Education ), Noah Sow accompanied young people and young adults through difficult life decisions from 2008 to 2010 in reports.

Germany black and white

In 2008 Noah Sow published the book Deutschland Schwarz Weiß: der everyday Rassismus in C. Bertelsmann Verlag . She sees the reasons for what she believes is a latent racism in Germany in “upbringing, tradition and not dealing with colonial history”. The German public is still racist and has only replaced old racist terms with new ones: “Migration background is also such a disguised word. The translation is simply 'non-Aryans'. ”In the book, she called for an anti-racist media council, among other things.

The second edition of the book was published in July 2009 by Goldmann Verlag. In July 2010, the audio book version of Germany Black and White: Everyday Racism was released on the Jeanne Dark Records label .

A revised version was published in 2018 in paperback as book-on-demand .

reception

In a review in Die Zeit in 2008 the book was described as "annoying" because it indiscriminately and in any way attaches the accusation of racism to anyone who even mentions external characteristics such as skin color. Noah Sow regards it as racism when someone is called a “dark-skinned German” and generally suspects all whites under general suspicion, which should then be confirmed by contradicting Sow's ideas. The journalist Katrin Rönicke questions the educational effect of the book because of this blanket accusation of racism, since it lacks the necessary respect for the reader. The star, on the other hand, had the headline: "A clever, an important book". The Hamburger Abendblatt wrote in an interview: “Although Sow examines the phenomenon of racism in great detail linguistically, historically and medially, her tone of voice is not factual, but angry, humorous and polemical. […] Since Sow continuously questions the self-image with which the German white majority defines normal and deviant , reading it is uncomfortable but rewarding. [...] Sow is pleased that her book is published by a popular publisher like Bertelsmann, without having to serve the industry's desire for biographical stories of suffering. "

Further development

On the basis of her readings for the book Germany Black and White , Sow produced an interactive multimedia stage show with stand-up comedy , video clips, live radio plays, quizzes, rap and short readings, the so-called edutainment attack! . In addition to Noah Sow, the London essayist and sociologist Mutlu Ergün will also be on stage. This stage program has been on tour in Germany since 2009, including as part of Black History Month and on behalf of the Federal Agency for Civic Education and various non-governmental organizations or at the Contre Le Racisme Festival .
