Noel Croswell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Noel Alfred Croswell , also written Crosswell (* 1909 , † 1964 ), was a British-born police officer and the first Jamaican police commissioner since the country's independence.

Life

Croswell attended Jamaica College in Kingston and West Buckland School in the English District of North Devon .

He joined the civil service in 1928 as a clerk in the Collector General's Department and worked for the Colonial Secretary's Office for seven years. In 1937 he was accepted into the police service of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in the rank of sub-inspector . When he was appointed police chief shortly before the country's independence after the retirement of his predecessor Brownwell, this initially met with protests from the Jamaican Police Association, because Croswell had already been retired as Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1959.

Croswell died in 1964 while on duty. His marriage to his wife Barbara (1924–1973) resulted in three daughters; the older two are twins (* 1951).
