Noir ( Japanese ノ ワ ー ル , Nowāru ) is an anime television series based on the script by Ryoei Tsukimura and implemented by the Bee Train studio with Kōichi Mashimo as director. According Mashimo the series belongs together with Madlax (2004) and El Cazador (2007), a trilogy in girls-with-guns - Genre .

Mireille Bouquet ( ミ レ イ ユ ・ ブ ー ケ ) was born in Corsica and is a professional contract killer from Paris. One day she receives a mysterious email from the Japanese schoolgirl Kirika Yūmura ( 夕 叢 霧 香 , Yūmura Kirika ). She asks Mireille to take her on a pilgrimage into the past. At first Mireille believes it was a joke, but then a melody sounds that awakens a fragmentary childhood memory in her.
She travels to Japan to meet Kirika. On an abandoned construction site, she confronts Kirika. She takes out an old pocket watch, which plays the melody again. It seems that the girl must have something to do with Mireille's past, the murder of her parents and her brother. That was the last time Mireille heard this melody. When she asks again who she is, Kirika answers "Noir"! Before Mireille can learn more, Kirika runs into a half-finished building.
Shortly afterwards, a group of men appear and try to kill them. While Kirika seems to be fleeing, Mireille faces the fight. When she is overwhelmed, Kirika suddenly appears and kills the attacker with ice-cold precision. After the fight is over, she bursts into tears. She doesn't understand why it is so easy for her to kill people without feeling sad about it.
Back in Kirika's house, she tells Mireille her story: she woke up in this house with no memories of her childhood. She only knows her name from her student ID , which she found next to the old pocket watch, a photo with her and her parents, and a pistol. She just knows that she is noir . Kirika asks Mireille to help her find her past.
Mireille explains that she's been investigating. Kirika's alleged parents never existed and all official documents are fake. She is initially reluctant to work together because she always works alone as a contract killer. But why does the melody of an old pocket watch evoke memories in her? And what does Kirika have to do with it? Why did the strangers want to kill them both?
They make an agreement to work together to solve the mystery of their past. After that, however, Mireille will kill Kirika in order to be able to go about her job again undetected. From now on they work together under the code name Noir and soon find out that this name has a very long tradition. A mysterious organization, Les Soldats , has ordered their deaths, and they meet Chloe ( ク ロ エ ), who claims to be the true Noir .
Conception
The two main characters use pistols, which are also known from James Bond films , as weapons . Mireille uses a Walther P99 like the one Pierce Brosnan used as a Bond weapon. Kirika uses a Beretta M1934 , which Sean Connery brought in as James Bond a warning that it nearly cost him his life when the load jammed. A Walther PPK was then adapted to him. The Walther PPK is used in a special version by some opponents among the Les Soldats .
The mystery of the past of the two main characters runs like a red thread through all episodes. In spite of numerous fighting, bloody depictions of violence are always avoided.

Anime
The series was produced in 2001 by the animation studio Bee Train . Stylistically it corresponds approximately to an action - thriller , but also contains many elements of film noir .
The anime ran for the first time in Japan from April 6, 2001 to September 27, 2001 on TV Tokyo , in Germany it was first broadcast by VIVA from April 5, 2004 to June 29, 2004 .

The music in Noir is mainly composed of a mix of techno , opera and French music. All music, with the exception of the opening and closing credits, was composed by Yuki Kajiura . Hitoshi Konno played the violin and Yuriko Kaida sang the non-instrumental pieces.
Music publications
A total of three soundtracks for the anime were released by the record label JVC Victor , which is part of Victor Entertainment . The first CD, entitled Noir Original Soundtrack I , was released on June 21, 2001 and was created by Yuki Kajiura with Chiaki Ishikawa . The second CD, Noir Original Soundtrack II , was released on October 3, 2001 and was made in collaboration with many artists such as Akino Arai and Yuki Kajiura as composers and Chiaki Ishikawa ( See-Saw ), Junko Wakamatsu , Masayoshi Furukawa , Matarū Misawa , Hiroyasu Yaguchi , Hitoshi Konno , Chiaki Ogasawara , Yuri Kasahara and Yuriko Kaida as artists. This was followed on November 7, 2001 "Noir: Blanc Dans Noir" and contained pieces by Yuki Kajiura, Hōko Kuwashima and Aya Hisakawa .
Since May 3, 2005 and October 4, 2005, the first two CDs of the Geneon label were also offered in the United States .
Trivia
Mireille uses quotations more often, especially from Edgar Allan Poe and Fyodor Michailowitsch Dostojewski . In addition, the former KGB agent Yuri Nazarov calls his cat Prince Myshkin, after Dostoevsky's Idiot .
