Noktara is a German-language website that is run jointly by Soufian El Khayari and Derya Sami Saydjari and publishes daily satirical articles in the style of newspaper articles and agency reports . Noktara dedicates itself to religious content, daily political events and lifestyle topics with “cynical humor”. Due to the choice of topics and the Muslim perspective, Noktara can be classified as “ethno-satire”.

History and meaning of the name

Inspired by the postillon and the explosive news situation around terrorism , racism , right-wing populism , the refugee crisis , the LGBT community , Erdogan , Donald Trump , IS , the Syrian war , the Middle East conflict , the integration debate , the headscarf dispute , the burqa ban and Islam came about in 2016 the idea for Noktara as a satirical answer while driving together. The name Noktara is derived from the Arabic and Turkish words for joke. For the better sound, the makers added the syllable "ra". The slogan "News from the Orient, already today!" Alludes to the alleged "Islamization of the West" as propagated by Pegida . With a wink , Noktara describes himself on Facebook as the “oriental lie press and propaganda leaflet of the secret Islamization of the West” and threatens anyone who does not follow with a stoning on Twitter .

Content

Slogan: "Laughing together for a better world"

In addition to classic satirical news, Noktara publishes, based on sites such as Buzzfeed, list articles, "Facts from the Orient" comparable to the factillon, various videos, surveys, psychological tests, events, joking stock prices and a news ticker.

public perception

Within a few months, Noktara caused quite a stir on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter and was described by journalists as a “Muslim postillon”. As a homage to this title, Noktara published a list of postillion articles that she would have liked to publish herself.

Dominoes in the Kaaba look.

In the run-up to Christmas 2016, Noktara confused parts of the Muslim community with what was supposedly the first Islamic Advent calendar and asked its readers to open a door every day with a click of the mouse in order to then surprise them with the inflationary use of the word “ haram ”. At Noktara, this element developed into a running gag on other public holidays such as Easter , Halloween and Valentine's Day and culminated in choosing “haram” as the word of the year . Also at Christmas 2016, Noktara put an article into circulation, according to which the Swiss chocolate manufacturer Lindt wanted to bring a new type of dominoes for Muslims on the market, which is visually reminiscent of the Kaaba , and received inquiries about where to buy it.

Noktara gained international attention after a report on the Franco-German television station Arte , in which Noktara was described as a “pioneer of German-Muslim satire”.

On the occasion of International World Water Day , Noktara produced a satirical promotional video in 2016 for the alleged sale of Zamzam water by the large corporation Nestlé and thus became a topic of conversation for Mimikama .

In the Austrian cultural magazine Biber Noktara was in addition to, the Grimme Online Award winning, Datteltätern counted as "satire Caliphate".

In Ramadan 2017, Noktara parodied a real AfD poster about Muslims with a satire poster that many readers thought was credible. In Ramadan 2018, Noktara published a satirical article in which it could be read that the city of Essen would be renamed "Fasting" out of consideration for the fasting Muslims and as a sign of good togetherness for the time of the month of fasting. The Hungarian news program Híradó on the state television broadcaster MTVA then broadcast the report in the main evening news.

In April 2017, the Noktara team presented their news satire for the first time in a live stage show.

Noktara has also made a name for itself in the Muslim community, in particular through controversial contributions, dealing with sensitive taboo topics and dealing with internal Muslim problems.
