Nola Darling (original title She's Gotta Have It ) is an American television series that premiered on November 23, 2017 on the video-on-demand provider Netflix . It is based on the comedy Nola Darling , director Spike Lee's debut feature film from 1986. Lee developed the series, has directed all episodes to date and wrote the scripts for three episodes.
On January 1, 2018, Netflix announced that it had ordered a second season, which was first released on May 24, 2019. On July 17, 2019, Netflix announced that there would be no third season and that the series would end.
action
Nola Darling is a young painter and art teacher who lives in a neighborhood of Brooklyn that is becoming increasingly gentrified . She is polyamorous and has sexual relationships with three men: Jamie Overstreet, a sensitive family man and quite wealthy financial advisor ; Mars Blackmon, a nonchalant hipster who works in a bike shop, and Greer Childs, an arrogant , self-loving model . At first the three don't know anything about each other. They often struggle with Nola's desire to remain independent. Nola, who is pansexual , also meets her old sex partner Opal Gilstrap during the course of the series. The two relive their relationship, and Nola befriends Opal's daughter Skylar. The two split up for a while, but at the beginning of the second season they are in a committed relationship.
In addition to Nola's private life, political issues are also dealt with in several episodes. For example, the eighth episode of the first season begins with the reactions of the characters to Donald Trump's election victory . In the ninth episode of the same season, several characters protest against the aforementioned gentrification of their neighborhood. In the seventh episode of the second season Nola and Mars travel with their friends Shemekka Epps and Winnie win for San Juan to Hurricane Victims to provide financial support that are largely ignored by the US government. Nola also represents feminist positions, as she advocates emancipation and equality , and portrays Shemekka, an aspiring dancer, who, according to her, perfectly represents the femininity of black women from Brooklyn.

reception
In the Internet Movie Database, the series achieved a rating of 6.7 out of ten stars based on 3210 votes. The first season achieved a critic rating of 88 percent based on 56 reviews and a viewer rating of 78 percent based on 196 votes on Rotten Tomatoes . The second season received an average review score of 67 percent based on 9 reviews. On Metacritic, the series received a 77 out of 100 percent rating based on 26 reviews.
Sibel Schick criticized in the taz that Nola Darling is not really pansexual, but merely a "typically hetero-flexible woman with minimal homosexual tendencies". In addition, Nola is not really independent because, after her lover Jamie no longer wants to support her financially, she receives a scholarship. For this, Schick praised a difference to the film: In this film, Nola is raped by Jamie , which she doesn't really care because she sees it as a punishment for her lifestyle. In the series, however, Nola is sexually harassed by a stranger on the street , which traumatizes her and causes flashbacks . The depiction of the consequences of sexualized violence is rarely shown on television, making this depiction all the more important in the series. In addition, the music of the production is beautiful. Schick closed her criticism with the words that Nola Darling was an "important production for the representation of people of color ", mainly because the characters are not only defined by their skin color. However, the series fails when it comes to portraying pansexual, self-determined women.
“Only the key moment of sexual assault gives direction to events. As common as the incident seems at first sight and as quickly as it seems to be forgotten - something nests in Nola's subconscious and develops into a traumatic experience that calls into question her entire life plan. (...) Now she not only doubts her sexuality and the concept of polyamory, but also her mental health. (...) In Nola Darling, Lee shows a tightly gentrified Fort Greene, in which the black residents are bought out of their brownstones by white newcomers - knowing full well that it was his films too, with their dazzling depiction of the New York Borroughs contributed to its current attractiveness. (...) In addition to the fight for the streets of Brooklyn, Nola Darling also includes the protagonist's fight against sexism and sexual violence, which the film had refused to do. One of the strengths of the sometimes half-baked series is that Nola wages this fight primarily with the means of art. (...) In 2017, Nola's way of life is no longer revolutionary. Your handling of sexual violence is even more so. "
