Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Nolina brittoniana is endemic to a limited area at sea level in the US state of Florida . It grows in forest regions on sandy soil together with Yucca filamentosa , various Opuntia species and the palmetto palm ( Sabal palmetto ).

The first description was in 1895 by George Valentine Nash . Nolina brittoniana is a member of the Nolina section . It is extremely rare and grows in a limited area in Florida. Characteristic are the grass-like, long leaves, which are similar to the Nolina georgiana found in the north in Georgia and South Carolina . However, the leaves of Nolina brittoniana are shorter and wider. Both types are fire resistant.

Nolina brittoniana is endangered by new settlements. It is listed as a rare and endangered species on the Florida state list and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service list.
