Noor Jehan

Noor Jehan (also Nurjehan ; Panjabi ਨੂਰ੍ ਜਹਾਂ ; Urdu نور جہاں; Hindi नूर जहाँ Nūr Jahā̃ ; * September 21, 1926 in Kasur , Punjab , British India ; † December 23, 2000 in Karachi , Pakistan ) was an Indo-Pakistani singer , actress, and director who was active from the 1930s to the 1990s. Today she is considered one of the most successful singers on the Indian subcontinent, and she was considered a role model for Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle .

Life

Noor Jehan was born as Allah Rakha Wasai (الله واسی) in Kasur in today's Pakistani part of Punjab . She studied music under Ghulam Mohammed Khan . After several appearances on local theaters in Calcutta , she made her film debut there in 1935 in Punjabi films . She played under the name "Baby Noor Jehan" in Krishna Dev Mehras Sheila (1935) and Heer Syal (1938), two productions sponsored by Madan Theaters . In Lahore she then appeared prominently in Dalsukh Pancholi's musical production Gul-e-Bakavali (1939). Her breakthrough as an actress came in 1940 with the Pancholi production Yamla Jat , directed by Moti Gidwani . In the film she also sang some songs by the film composition Ghulam Haider , which are still very popular today.

In 1942 she went to Bombay , the center of the North Indian film industry, and married the director Shaukat Hussain Rizvi . She appeared in his films Khandaan (1942), Naukar (1943), Dost (1944), Zeenat (1945) and Jugnu (1947). Her most successful films of the 1940s include Jugnu , which she shows alongside Dilip Kumar , the triangular stories Duhai (1943) by Vishnukumar Maganlal Vyas with Shanta Apte and Mehboob Khan's Anmol Ghadi (1946) with Suraiya , who also write their own songs sang.

In the course of the partition of India , she emigrated to Pakistan with her husband in 1947; back to Lahore where she continued her career. From then on she played and sang alternately in Pakistani and Indian films . In 1951 she made the punjabi movie Chanway , which she directed, starred, produced music, and sang all of the songs. The film is one of the most successful films in Pakistan of the 1950s. In 1958 she played the title role in Anwar Kemal Pasha's film adaptation of the play Anarkali by Imtiaz Ali Taj .

After a few flops in the late 1950s, she retired from acting, but stayed with playback singing in Pakistani and Indian films. She often sang solo songs, but also some duets, with moderate success. In the 1980s, there was next to no film in Pakistani punjabi cinema without their songs. She recorded two parts of the musical series Taranum in Pakistan in the 1980s / 1990s . Her star fell from the late 1990s and she retired from the film business. In 2000 she died of a heart attack.
