Nora Illi

Nora Illi (born on April 3, 1984 in Uster , Canton of Zurich ; died on March 23, 2020 in Bremgarten near Bern ) was a Swiss woman who converted to Islam ; As a member of the board of the Islamic Central Council of Switzerland , she occasionally caused heated public discussions with her views.

Life

Illi was born in Uster as the daughter of a German psychotherapist and a Swiss social worker. The parents divorced. Illi dropped out of high school and trained as a polygraph .

She was baptized a Catholic at her own request . As a teenager she was active in the punk scene and converted to Sunni Islam at the age of 18 . In public she wore the niqab face veil . She headed the “Department for Women's Affairs” at the Islamic Central Council of Switzerland (IZRS). In this role she also appeared on television programs. An appearance on the talk show Anne Will in autumn 2016 sparked controversy and discussions about whether and how radical opinions should be represented on talk shows.

Nora Illi was married to the IT specialist Qaasim Illi, who also worked at the IZRS, and had six children.

She died on March 23, 2020 at the age of 35 as a result of a long-standing illness of breast cancer.

Positions

Illi advocated polygyny , plural marriage in which a man can have several wives. She rejected general polygamy , which can apply to both sexes. In November 2016, there was a scandal on the talk show Anne Will when quotes from her were shown that were interpreted as war propaganda for the terrorist militia Islamic State . Illi then received several criminal charges ; the public prosecutor's office in Hamburg closed all preliminary investigations in February 2017.
