Norbert Martin

Norbert Martin (born July 11, 1936 in Herschbach / Unterwesterwald, † June 18, 2020 ) was a German sociologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Rheinbach near Bonn in 1958 , Martin studied German , Catholic theology and Christian social studies at the universities of Münster and Freiburg until 1963 , completing his studies with the state examination. When Joseph Hoffner he obtained his diploma in Christian social teaching. He then did a doctoral degree in sociology , philosophy and pedagogy at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster , Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg , Ruhr University Bochum and Saarland University , where he obtained a doctorate in the sociology of religion in 1967. phil received his doctorate.

As a research assistant and later assistant to Helmut Schelsky (1963–1965) at the Social Research Center at the University of Münster in Dortmund , Martin's work focused on empirical research (petrochemicals and steel industry). After assistant positions at the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Saarbrücken, he switched to the policy department of the Ministry for Youth, Family and Health in Bonn. At the same time he was a lecturer at the Federal Academy for Public Administration in Bad Godesberg . In 1965 he was a co-founder of the Sociology Section of the Görres Society .

After habilitation at the University of Mainz in 1970 he was appointed to the newly created Department of Sociology at the University of Education Schwaebisch Gmuend and at the Freiburg University of Education appointed. He accepted the call to Freiburg, then switched to the Chair of Sociology at the University of Koblenz-Landau (formerly the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Education) in Koblenz in the 1970/71 winter semester , where he taught until his retirement in 2001. A wide range of lectures took him all over Germany. He also received teaching positions at the University of Mainz and at the Academy for Administration of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate.

In addition to other teaching positions, Martin was also a scientific advisor for questions of marriage and family to the Central Committee of German Catholics for 14 years , 12 years permanent visiting professor at the Lateran University in Rome (Institute "John Paul II for Studies on Marriage and Family"), 6 years Visiting professor at the Groote Seminar in the Diocese of Roermond and Vice President of the Medo-Institute there for family issues . In 1980 he and his wife were called by Pope John Paul II as lay auditors for the "World Synod of Bishops on the Family" in Rome. Since 1981 both were members of the Pontifical Council for the Family in Rome.

In the 1990s and until 2009, he and his wife led the International Apostolic Schoenstatt Family Federation, which exists in 18 countries. This activity was connected with many trips abroad (Poland, Austria, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Mexico, USA, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Brazil). On these occasions Martin gave guest lectures at various Latin American universities; the University of Buenos Aires awarded him the Medal of Merit.

After his retirement he taught at the "Hochschule Benedikt XVI. - Heiligenkreuz" near Vienna.

His numerous publications deal mainly with questions of youth, family, religion and health sociology, but also problems of social ethics and philosophy.
