Norbert Palz (born April 11, 1970 in Zweibrücken ) is a German architect , university professor and president of the Berlin University of the Arts since April 1, 2020 .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a draftsman with the architects Wandel Höfer Lorch in Saarbrücken from 1989 to 1991, Palz began studying architecture at the Technical University of Berlin in 1991, which he completed in 1999 as a graduate engineer. From 1999 to 2002 he worked at UN Studio in Amsterdam and NOX Architects in Rotterdam .

In 2003, together with Robert Banovic, he founded TARGADESIGN, an office for architecture and art production, which until 2010 specialized in digital design and manufacturing processes in art projects. Among other things, they took on work for Olafur Eliasson (Your Mobile Expectations BMW H2R, Serpentine Pavilion 2007), Thomas Demand (Grotte, Serpentine Pavillon w / OMA 2005, Nagelhaus, Lehnbachhaus) and Monica Bonvicini (Tower Munich). The expansion of the artistic spectrum with the help of digital technologies was the focus of project development and artistic dialogue.

In 2007, he received a doctoral scholarship at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen , which Palz completed in 2012 with a doctorate on additive manufacturing methods in architecture . During this time he was co-organizer of the symposium “Parametric Approaches II: Computation and Material” and held a series of lectures and international workshops (including Brighton , Vienna , Tel Aviv , Oslo , Aalborg ) on architectural topics in the context of computer-aided modeling and modern building construction . He was also an exhibiting participant in the 3rd International Architecture Biennal Beijing 2008 ”[Im] material Processes” (curated by Neil Leach).

After his appointment to the professorship "Digital Design and Construction" at the University of Applied Sciences Münster (MSA | Münster School of Architecture) 2010, Palz moved in the winter semester of the same year as a professor for "Digital and Experimental Design" at the Berlin University of the Arts , where he worked in the context of art , architecture and technology . An interdisciplinary teaching didactics and research method manifested his technological, political and cultural-scientific approach to research and teaching .

Since 2010, Palz has been researching the topic of CAD / CAM modeling, in particular the design and construction potential of large-format additive manufacturing . A more recent field of research is the investigation of computer art of the post-war period and its theoretical and creative importance for contemporary computer-aided architectural design. From 2015 to 2019, Palz was project manager in the EU Horizon 2020 Marie-Skłodowska-Curie research cluster ArcInTex on the subject of textile architecture on a building scale.

From 2015 to 2019, Palz was Vice Dean of the Faculty of Design and since 2018 First Vice President of the Berlin University of the Arts . On December 12, 2019, he was elected President of the Berlin University of the Arts. His appointment by the Berlin Senate followed on March 3, 2020. His five-year term began on April 1, 2020.

Palz is married to the Danish artist Kirsten Palz. They are parents of two sons and a daughter.
