Norbert Riedel

Norbert Riedel (born September 13, 1960 in Stuttgart ) is a German lawyer and diplomat . From 2017 to August 2020 he was ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein . He is ambassador-designate to Singapore .

Life

After graduating from the Eduard-Spranger-Gymnasium in Filderstadt (1979) and training as a bank clerk at Commerzbank AG Stuttgart (1979-1981), Riedel did his community service with the German Air Rescue Service in Stuttgart (1981-1982). From 1982 to 1988 he studied law at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and at the University of Caen / France (1984–1985). He was a scholarship holder of the Robert Bosch Foundation and the DAAD . In 1988 he completed his studies with the first state examination in law in Würzburg . From 1988 to 1991 Riedel was a research assistant at the Institute for International Law, European Law and International Business Law in Würzburg. In 1989 he received his doctorate from the University of Würzburg as Doctor iuris utriusque. He completed his legal preparatory service at the Bamberg Higher Regional Court in 1991 with the second state examination in Munich .

After initially teaching at the University of Würzburg , Riedel was appointed honorary professor at the law faculty of the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg in 2005, where he teaches European law.

He is married and has two children.

Foreign service

In 1991 Riedel entered the diplomatic service. After completing his training as an attaché, he worked in the economic department of the Federal Foreign Office from 1992 to 1993 . From 1993 to 1996 he worked at the German Embassy in Sofia, from 1996 to 1999 in the European Department of the Foreign Office , where he took part in the negotiations on the Treaty of Amsterdam. After working at the embassy in Lisbon (1999 to 2002), he was head of the European Union unit at the Federal Chancellery (2002 to 2005) and took part in the negotiations on the so-called European Constitutional Treaty. He then worked in the Foreign Office , initially from 2005 to 2007 as Head of the Visa Policy Department, then from 2007 to 2009 as Head of the Personnel Department for the Civil Service. In 2009 Riedel was appointed deputy head of the central department and representative for personnel in the Federal Foreign Office .

From 2010, Riedel was envoy to the German Embassy in Beijing, where he was business agent (ad interim) from June to September 2014. Based in the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin , he was then from 2014 to 2015, initially with the rank of ambassador, the special commissioner for cyber foreign policy and from 2015 to 2017 with the rank of ambassador, the commissioner for Asia and the Pacific.

From October 2017 to August 2020, Riedel was the ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Switzerland and Liechtenstein .
