Norman Somerville Macfarlane, Baron Macfarlane of Bearsden KT Kt DL (born March 5, 1926 ) is a British entrepreneur , manager and politician of the Conservative Party , who has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 1991 and has held numerous functions for the Culture and art in Scotland and especially in Glasgow .

Life

Entrepreneurs, managers and other engagements

After attending the High School of Glasgow , Macfarlane joined the Royal Artillery in 1945 and served in Palestine between 1945 and 1947 . On his return he took up activities in the private sector and in 1949 founded the packaging company NS Macfarlane & Co Ltd, which later became the Macfarlane Group plc. In the following years he was its managing director between 1973 and 1990 and also chairman of the board from 1973 to 1998 and has been honorary chairman of the board since 1999.

Macfarlane, who has been Scottish patron of the National Art Collection Fund since 1978 and was a signing member of Lloyd's of London from 1978 to 1997, was director of the Third Eye Center, the forerunner of CCA Glasgow , between 1978 and 1981 , and from 1979 to 1987 Board member of the Scottish Development Agency . He was also a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Glasgow from 1979 to 1987 and a member of the Board of Directors of the High School of Glasgow between 1979 and 1992, of which he has been Honorary President since then. Lord Macfarlane, who has been Patron of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association since 1992, was also Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1992, 1993 and 1997 . He has been Deputy Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire since 1993 and was made Knight Companion of the Thistle Order in 1996 . In the course of his life, Macfarlane has received several honorary doctorates from the University of Strathclyde (Hon LLD, 1986), the University of Glasgow (Hon LLD, 1988), the University of Stirling (1992), the University of Edinburgh (1992, Dr. hc), Glasgow Caledonian University (Hon LLD, 1993) and the University of Aberdeen (Hon LLD, 1995). He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (1984), the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1991) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (1992). Lord Macfarlane, who has been a Freeman of Dumfries and Galloway since 2006 and of Glasgow since 2007, is also an honorary patron of the Queen's Park football club and an honorary member of the Scottish Football League since 2006 .
