Norman Read (athlete)

Norman Richard Read (born August 13, 1931 in England , † May 22, 1994 in Pirongia , Waikato ) was a New Zealand walker and Olympic champion .

In 1953 Norman Read emigrated from England to New Zealand. Three years later at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956 , he won gold for New Zealand in the 50 km walk in a time of 4: 30: 42.8 hours. In 1960 in Rome , he finished 5th in the 20 km walk . Also in 1960 Read set his best time over 50 km with 4:21:23 h.

At the British Commonwealth Games in Kingston in 1966, walking was included in the program for the first time. Over 20 miles Read won bronze behind the Englishmen Ron Wallwork and Ray Middleton . Don Thompson came in fourth .

Norman Read died of a heart attack during a senior bicycle race at the age of 63.
