Nostra (Slavic for "on the rock" ; other explanation: Slov. "Na strani" = "on the side" see the place name Stranig in the market town of Kirchbach ; also the place name Postran in the town of Hermagor ) is a hamlet in the village of Birnbaum, and belongs to the municipality of Lesachtal in the Hermagor district in Carinthia .

Geographical location

The hamlet is located on the southern side of the Lesach Valley , at an altitude of 1,050 m and is part of the Kornat cadastral community . From a geographical point of view, the Lesachtal is a so-called UV valley. This means the shape of the cross section of the valley. In previous ice ages, glaciers formed a U-shaped trough valley into the mountainous landscape. The river Gail has a V-shaped over the following millennia in the U-valley V-shaped valley dug (the Gailschlucht). This resulted in settlement areas on the northern and southern sides of this gorge. The main traffic artery of the Lesach Valley, the B111, runs on the northern side of the valley. To reach Nostra you have to pass the 3 km long main access road from Birnbaum across the Gail Gorge .

Nostra is surrounded by several mountain ranges: the Lienz Dolomites in the north and the Gailtal Alps , as well as the Carnic Alps in the south . The Carnic Alps form the local border between Austria and Italy . This can be crossed over a 13 km long mountain path through the Wolayertal and past the Biegen mountain range at the so-called Wolayer Pass (1974), where the Wolayersee with the neighboring Wolayerseehütte is located.

Other surrounding villages are:

At least one valley must be crossed to reach these locations.

Population and economy

51 people (eleven families) currently live in Nostra, about ten of whom are mountain farmers with their own agricultural and forestry land. The agricultural area of the individual farms is between approx. 3 ha and 10 ha, which is therefore only sufficient for what is known as a sideline. Other sources of income in the village are in forestry, the work in the neighborhood community, tourism by renting rooms and holiday apartments as a vacation on the farm as well as in alternative medical healing practice. The rest of the workforce are commuters whose jobs are mostly outside the valley.

Infrastructure and culture

In the village there is a small chapel dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua , which is a branch church of the Kornat parish church, as well as a village well. In Nostra there is also the monument "CASA DITSCH", which since September 2006 has housed the work "The Triumph of Nature" by the artist Helmut Ditsch . For a short time the village has also had broadband internet. The next shop is in Birnbaum, 3 km away, as is the next tavern.
