Architecture and building history

The Abbey Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité was built in the 12th century in place of a previous building by the Benedictine order. Its founding date may go back to 1088. The Benedictines had already founded a priory in the same place in 768 and built their first church. The Romanesque building from the 12th century, however, was much larger and belonged to the Sacra di San Michele Abbey in Piedmont . It was designed as a fortified church and had many defensive structures such as battlements, defensive oriels , hurdles , walls, loopholes , moats and watchtowers. All defensive systems disappeared in the course of the 15th and 16th centuries.

The west facade is divided into three parts by two mighty, protruding buttresses. The entrance portal to be reached by stairs is in the central part. It is richly decorated and is girded by three column arches. Above the arches there are seven sculptures that no longer have heads and were, so to speak, beheaded during the French Revolution . The two outer sides of the west facade are each decorated by a blind arch, one of which even has a richly decorated tympanum . A rose window is positioned in the middle above the entrance portal. The end of the choir has absidioles . From the former fortified church, only two remains of the defensive dungeons are preserved, which can be seen along the first row of arches of the western aisle. On the outer walls of the aisles, numerous decorative tower corbels ( French Modillons ) out.

Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité consists of three naves, a central nave and two aisles. It is divided into five yokes . The numerous columns supporting the individual naves are closed off by artfully carved capitals . The crossing of the nave and transept is covered by a dome, above which the octagonal church tower , made in the Limousin style, rises. The choir , the main nave and the two side aisles have retained the Romanesque architectural style, with the exception of the two wings of the transept, redesigned in the Gothic style .

A gilded terracotta statue from 1581 is kept in the church. It was created by the sculptor Dionise Mathieu from Le Mans and represents Maria with the child. The sculpture is also inscribed as a Monument historique. It, too, was defaced during the French Revolution by cutting off both heads. However, these have now been replaced.

Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité was restored on the outside towards the end of the 1990s and completely renovated on the inside at the beginning of the 21st century.
