The Notwane (also Ngotwane ; English: Notwane River ) is a river in South Africa and Botswana . It is a left tributary of the Limpopo . A third of Botswana's population lives in the Notwane catchment area.

geography

The Notwane, initially also Ngotwane, rises in the South African province northwest about west of Zeerust . From there it flows approximately northwards. It is dammed to the Ngotwane Dam before it reaches the border between Botswana and South Africa . It follows the border, takes up the left tributary Taung and then reaches the Gaborone Dam near the capital Gaborone . In the further course it separates Gaborone from its suburb Tlokweng . The Notwane passes Mochudi and flows into the Limpopo in the province of Kgatleng , which forms the border with South Africa here. Its catchment area is 18,053 square kilometers.

Like its tributaries Taung, Metsimotlhabe, Peleng and Nnywane, the Notwane falls dry at times. On the other hand, flash floods occur after heavy rainfall .

Dams

The emergency wane is dammed by several dams. The Gaborone Dam has a capacity of around 141 million cubic meters. It serves to supply the Gaborone area including the city of Lobatse . Other dams in the catchment area are the Ngotwane Dam with a capacity of 18.8 million cubic meters, the Bokaa Dam on Metsimotlhabe, the Nnywane Dam on Nnywane near Lobatse and the Mogobane Reservoir on Taung.

Others

The football club Notwane FC from Gaborone, named after the river, plays in the Botswana Premier League .
