action

Nine year old Manuel lives with his mother because his parents are divorced. At home he struggles with neglect from his mother and regular conflicts with his adolescent sister. One evening he missed the public bus on the way to see his father. Manuel waits sadly in the cold, doesn't know where to go, until suddenly a car stops next to him. An elderly man, Walter, offers to take him to his father. Manuel hesitates a little and then he gets in ...

background

The short film deals with the negative consequences that can arise when parents of common children separate. Especially when they are minors, the children are often torn back and forth or even neglected, as is shown in the film as an example. The consequences can not only be long-term psychological problems, but also immediate critical situations. One of these is discussed in Novemberlichter : The main character Manuel gets into the car of a strange man, Walter, so that he can bring him to his father. The scenario is overshadowed by a possible crime, but a friendly relationship is slowly emerging between the two protagonists. Walter's motivations still seem ambivalent - there are moments that lead one to believe that he is pursuing illegal intentions with Manuel, others that reinforce the interpretation of purely caring ambitions. This dichotomous approach is not clarified until the end of the plot, the audience is divided in their further expectations and both types of reception remain legitimate.

music

The originally planned title The night in which the stars slept is finally found in the film music, which was composed and produced especially for the film by Oliver Linus. The title The night, the stars fell asleep tries with dissonant and distorted sounds to musically express the feelings of little Manuel and the approaching danger. The second song, Walters Theme, ends with a harmonically incomplete ending ( half- ending ). The music thus creates a tension and expectation that builds up from then on until the open end of the film and, like the end, is deliberately not dissolved.
