The Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (Iglesia Parroquial Matriz de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción) is the main Roman Catholic church in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife .

history

In the last years of the 15th century a chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross was built on the place where the nave of the church rises today . From 1539 the building served as a parish church. The room was extended in 1558. There was probably a wall of bells with a small bell on the southwest corner. To protect the building from the occasional flooding, a wall was built in 1605 between the church and the Barranco de Santos. It had to be expanded and renewed several times (1729, 1838). In 1638 the name of the church was changed from Iglesia de Santa Cruz to Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Concepción . The left aisle was added around 1640. After a fire on July 2, 1652, the church was rebuilt. The chancel was expanded to the east and the main nave was given its current dimensions. At the same time the right aisle was built. In 1664 the church got its first organ. The economic situation in Santa Cruz de Tenerife improved from the middle of the 17th century. This increased the volume of donations and gifts from wealthy merchants. The chapels on the north and south sides of the church were built in the 17th and 18th centuries from these donations. Before 1776 the church had a wall of bells (espadaña) on the south-western corner. In 1788 the construction of a new tower on the north side of the church began. According to the plans of the architect Antonio Samper, it was to be equipped with a roof similar to that on the tower of the San Francisco Church. In its current form, the tower is one of the city's landmarks. In the period from 1994 to 1996 the church was closed and completely restored according to plans by the architect José Miguel Márquez Zárate. The building was listed as a historical monument in 1983. In December 2008 this protection was extended to the area around the church.

Exterior view

The exterior view of the building does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the interior layout. There are a variety of buildings with different heights and roof shapes. The entrance area on the west side consists of an arched hall above which the choir is located, which is surrounded on the three outer sides by a roofed (Canarian) balcony. There is also a balcony on the sacristy on the south side. The tower on the north side of the church is a symbol of the city.

The interior is clearly divided into five naves, to which the chancel adjoins the main nave and the inner aisles. The crossing is closed at the top by an oval dome with a glazed lantern . The main nave and the two inner aisles each have a continuous wooden ceiling. The two inner aisles are separated from the main nave by six round arches supported by Ionic columns. The altar rooms and chapels each have separate ceilings. These are decorated with carvings in the Mudejar style or with paintings.

Main nave

The main altar was made between 1726 and 1731 and gilded fifteen years later. The sculpture of the patron saint in the center of the altar was made by the La Orotava sculptor Fernando Estévez . The painting above the central niche shows the Assumption of Mary . The sculptures of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne in the side niches were made by the La Laguna sculptor José Rodríguez de la Oliva. The silver tabernacle from 1745 was reworked and expanded at the end of the 19th century by the silversmith Rafael Fernández Trujillo from La Laguna. In the center of the ceiling of the chancel is a painting by an unknown Canarian artist from the second half of the 18th century. It is entitled Contemplación mistica de la Santísima Trinidad .

The pulpit , which is no longer used today after the 2nd Vatican Council , was consecrated on December 8, 1736. It comes from Genoa and consists of veined marble and jasper .

The choir loft was created when the community expanded significantly in the course of the 18th century. The choir stalls from the chancel of the main nave were relocated to the new gallery at the west end of the main nave. The carving of the choir stalls is attributed to the French artist Guillermo Verau. The gallery protrudes to the west over the main nave. On the gallery is an organ that was built in 1862 by the English company Bevington and Sons.

Right inner aisle

The right inner aisle was completed in 1674. The altar Nuestra Señora de la Soledad at the head side was donated by the brotherhood of the same name, which had its burial chapel here. The figure of Dolorosa was created by José Luján Pérez.

The Ecce homo or Señor de la Cañita altar is on the west side of the church. When the choir gallery was created at the beginning of the 18th century, the space of the previous chapel was needed for the staircase. Therefore, the altar was installed on the western end wall of the right inner aisle. In the middle niche is the figure of a seated Christ, which was created by an unknown artist, in the left niche the figure of San Pedro de las Lágrimas in the right niche the figure of Maria Magdalena . This chapel was the burial chapel of the clergy of the church.

The chapel of San Matías (Capilla de Carta), located in a passage to the sacristy behind the right inner aisle, inaccessible to visitors, was completed in 1740. The chapel has a square base and an octagonal dome. All walls are clad with baroque wood carvings, which are said to come from the artist Guillermo Verau, who comes from France but lives on Tenerife. The three holy figures of San Matías, San Andrés and San Carlos Borromeo were imported from Genoa in 1737.

Right outer aisle

The right outer aisle of the church is divided into four chapels. The space of the fifth Ecce Homo chapel, which previously existed at the west end, was required for a staircase when the choir gallery was constructed.

The altar of the Nuestra Señora del Carmen used to be in a niche in the then still closed side wall of the right inner aisle. The chapel was only built in 1720. In the upper part of the altar is a replica of a picture that Cristóbal Hernández de Quintana painted for the church of Santa María de los Remedios in La Laguna . It shows the mass of Saint Gregory (La Misa de San Gregorio). The figures made of colored painted wood represent Saints Teresa de Jesús and San Nicolás de Bari . They are by Antonio María Maragliano. Since 1919, the statue of the Virgen del Carmen has been driven through the port in procession on a port launch on July 16 as part of the Fiestas del Carmen . The altar contains in an urn a relic of Saint Clement that the Patriarch of Antioch gave in 1703.

The Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua (Capilla de San Antonio de Padua or Capilla del Rosario) was built in 1726. At the center of the altar is the figure of Maria del Rosario .

The chapel of St. John Nepomuk (Capilla de San Juan Nepomuceno) is z. Currently renovated (2013) and is therefore closed.

The altar of the Chapel of St. Peter (Capilla de San Pedro Papa) was consecrated in 1745. It comes from Sebastian Fernández Méndez el joven. (1738) The figure of Saint Peter as a penitent probably comes from the environment of the Baroque sculptor Francisco Salzillo y Alcaraz (1701–1783) who worked in Murcia (city )

Left inner aisle

The middle part of the calvary altar on the front of the inner left aisle is formed by a crucifixion group made up of the figures of Cristo del buen viaje , the Virgen Dolorosa and Juan evangelista .

The Altar de los Ánimas is located on the western end wall of the left aisle. The painting of purgatory was painted in 1745 by Luis José from La Palma. The image of María Dolorosa is attributed to the painter and sculptor Antonio María Maragliano (1664–1741) from Genoa.

Left outer aisle

The aisle on the north side is divided into four chapels. Construction of all of these chapels was completed in 1735.

The altar of the San Francisco Javier Chapel is from 1747. This chapel has its own sacristy, which adjoins the chapel to the east. The figure of the Virgen de la O or Virgen de la Esperanza was created in the 17th century. It is surrounded by the figures of Saint Domingo and Saint Francis .

The figure of Santiago Matamoros on horseback in the Santiago Chapel is by an unknown artist from the 18th century. At the feet of the horse there used to be the sculptures of two severed black heads. The tombstone of Antonio Gutiérrez is in the chapel . He was in command of the defenders when the British Navy attacked Santa Cruz on July 25, 1797 under the command of Rear Admiral Nelson.

The windows in the baptistery were created by Francisco Herraiz Malo in the 20th century. The picture of the Nativity is from Juan de Miranda. The Genoese marble baptismal bowl was donated in 1696.

The Chapel of San Cayetano (San José) was built in 1674 and, like the baptistery, was outside the church when it was founded. She was included in the construction of the aisle. The altar dates from 1747. The figure of Saint Joseph was created by José Luján Pérez. On the west side of the chapel are the figures of Christ the Prisoner (Nuestro Padre Jesús Cautivo) by the sculptor Juan Delgado Martín-Prat from 1999 and the Our Lady of Hope, the Esperanza Macarena . It was created in 1958 based on the Esperanza Macarena de Sevilla by the artist Antonio Giménez Martínez, who works in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The church is the starting point for a large number of processions. During Lent, many of the saints are not placed in the altars, but on the transport frames of the processions. During this time, the altars are partially decorated with other figures of saints.
