Nueva Palmira is a city in southwest Uruguay .
geography
The city is located in the Colonia department on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River , which also forms the border with neighboring Argentina , and across from the Paraná River delta . It is located northwest of the city of Carmelo . On the northern border of the city, which is formed by the Arroyo del Sauce , the border with the Soriano department runs . The distance to the southeastern capital Montevideo is about 280 km.
history
The city was founded on October 26, 1831 by Felipe Santiago Torres Leiva . In the 1990s, the port of Nueva Palmira was made available to Bolivia , but never used on the Bolivian side. The agreement on free use was renewed under Presidents Evo Morales (Bolivia) and Tabaré Vázquez (Uruguay). The incumbent Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica declared in 2010: “We offered Bolivia access to the Atlantic.” Nueva Palmira is now considered Bolivian “access to the sea”.

With the Liceo de Nueva Palmira "Dr. Medulio Pérez Fontana" founded in 1941, Nueva Palmira has a secondary school ( Liceo ).
economy
Due to its strategic location in the delta of the rivers Río Uruguay and Río Paraná and their transition into the Río de la Plata , the city has an important port in the region.

With a population of 9,857 (as of 2011), of which 4,852 are male and 5,005 female, it is one of the larger cities within the department.
