ORF Digital is the name of the digital television and radio program bouquet. It has been broadcast on the Astra satellite since 1997 . Programs that do not belong to ORF are also broadcast. For licensing reasons, some programs (e.g. ORF eins, ORF 2, ATV) are encrypted in Irdeto2 , Cryptoworks and, for Austrian Sky customers, in NDS Videoguard and Nagravision Aladin . Encryption is necessary because the licensors of sports or film rights, for example, calculate the fees depending on the potential recipients. Since the satellite signal cannot technically be restricted to Austrian territory and the fees for a European or global broadcast would be too high, the recipient is restricted by means of encryption. The smart card for decryption is only available for people with an Austrian residence.
