Oberriet (formerly also Oberried ) is a former district and today's hamlet of the municipality of Eglisau in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland , which had to be partially abandoned between 1915 and 1920 due to the damming of the Rhine .

geography

The hamlet is located about one kilometer up the Rhine from the historic town center of Eglisau, at the foot of the Hummelberg , on the right bank of the Rhine. It borders in the west on the Eglisau district of Burg and in the north and east on the municipality of Buchberg SH . The Oberrieterberg above the hamlet and the Rhinacher to the northeast still serve as vineyards today . Oberriet is crossed by two well-known hiking trails . While stage 5 ( Rheinau – Eglisau) of the regional hiking route 60 ViaRhenana runs above the Oberrieterberg vineyard , the second path leads along the banks of the Rhine from Eglisau to the Tössegg – Buchberg ferry .

history

Oberriet originally had 17 buildings, most of which were in a row on the banks of the Rhine. The population consisted mainly of fishermen and farmers. Until the first third of the 19th century, the district was only accessible via a narrow footpath. A road was only built in 1834. Due to the construction of the Eglisau-Glattfelden power plant between 1915 and 1920 and the associated damming of the Rhine, 15 of 17 buildings had to be demolished. Only two somewhat higher residential buildings from the 16th and 18th centuries have been preserved to this day. More than 80 people had to leave their homes forever. In order to connect the remaining buildings with the town, a new 750 meter long street was built.

In 1954, the Eglisau municipal council placed the riverside landscape in Oberriet under protection. Since 1990 it has been classified as a nature reserve of supra-municipal importance. The bank area can therefore only be used to a limited extent. For example, in the years 2016–2017, the municipality of Eglisau had to remove all four Oberriets boat berths and a fireplace and relocate them to new locations on the instructions of the Canton of Zurich.
