Ocean Shores is a city in Grays Harbor County in the state of Washington ( United States ). In 2000 the city had 3836 inhabitants.

history

Even before the arrival of European explorers and settlers, the peninsula had been used for trade and other purposes by the Chehalis and Quinault Indian tribes belonging to the Chinook .

On May 7, 1792, the navigator Robert Gray entered the bay and named it Bullfinch Harbor . This bay was later renamed Gray's Harbor by George Vancouver in honor of Captain Gray . The first known white settler on the peninsula was Matthew McGee, who settled in the early 1860s. He sold the southern part of the peninsula in 1878 to AO Damon, who set up a trading post, including a jetty to the Oyehut Canal. Damon then took over the entire peninsula from McGee and later bequeathed it to his grandson Ralph Minard, who used the area for cattle from 1929 until it was sold to the Ocean Shores Development Corporation for one million US dollars in 1960 .

At this point, the state government was considering legalizing various forms of gambling . Anticipating rapid development, Ocean Shores Development Corporation began selling land in a trailer parked in the dunes. Soon the news of a possible boom in Ocean Shores spread. The lot price started at $ 595 per lot and these were sold unseen due to the site plans. The number of parcels sold rose and prices rose. However, boundary stones were only laid and the parcels designated when construction work began on the extensive road system on the peninsula. In the first year, 25 homes were built and their owners became founding members of the Ocean Shores Community Club.

As development continued, the owner of the Ginny Simms Restaurant and Nightclub brought Hollywood celebrities into play. A number of Hollywood stars flew in at the opening, and more than 10,000 people came to Bowerman Airfield to see them.

In December 1960, 25 miles of canals were planned, a six-hole golf course was opened and a mall was built. The construction boom of 1961 brought motels, three restaurants and an airfield to be built on the sandy bottom of the peninsula. The marina was opened in 1963 and the SS Catala was brought in from California and moored as the "Boatel" . Two years later, a southwest winter storm set her aground and the ship was one of the most famous wrecks on the Washington coast for many years . In 1966 the famous gates were built at the city entrance.

Pat Boone settled here in 1967, became a shareholder in Ocean Shores Estates Incorporated, and organized celebrity golf tournaments to promote Ocean Shores.

In 1969 Ocean Shores was declared the "Richest Small Town" and had 900 permanent residents. The following year the city was founded and a planning commission began its work. The city's first school opened in 1971 and the asphalting of the streets continued.

During the 1980s, the city struggled with various setbacks from Washington's economic recession; after overcoming them in the 1990s, the business situation recovered and the number of new buildings increased.

The price of the parcels ranged from $ 25,000 to several hundred thousand US dollars for beach parcels in early 2007.
