The wind farm Rhyl Flats is an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea ( Liverpool Bay - Bay of Liverpool ), about 8 km off the coast of Wales ( United Kingdom ) between Llandudno and Rhyl .

The park consists of 25 wind turbines of the type Siemens SWT 3.6-107 with a rotor diameter of 107 m and an installed electric output of 3.6 megawatts, for a total of about 90 MW. The gondolas with the generators are 80 m above sea level. The 25 systems are spread over an area of around 10 km². The bay is about 15 m deep at this point. The electricity produced is conducted via submarine cables to a substation on land (in Towyn ).

Rhyl Flats is one of four offshore wind farms in Liverpool Bay: North Hoyle to the east, with an output of 60 MW, went into operation in 2003. Burbo Bank with 90 MW is even further east . The much larger Gwynt y Môr park with 160 systems for 576 MW was officially put into operation in June 2015. Burbo Bank belongs to the Danish company Dong Energy , the other three belong to RWE Innogy (formerly RWE npower ).

history

The Rhyl Flats wind farm is part of "Round 1" of the Crown Estate's offshore wind farm development program , which began in late 2000.

The project development for the park was initially driven by the planner Celtic Offshore Wind Limited (COWL) , who received the building permit for it in 2002. In the same year npower renewables took over the project from COWL .

Construction of the wind farm began in the summer of 2007. The onshore substation was completed in 2008. About two years after the start of construction, in July 2009, the first of the 25 wind turbines fed in electricity for the first time. On December 2, 2009, the wind farm was officially commissioned in the presence of the British Minister for Wales, Peter Hain .
