Oh Tannenbaum is a German TV film by Matthias Tiefenbacher from 2007. The Christmas comedy was based on a script by the author Christoph Mattner and is based on motifs from Charles Dickens ' classic Christmas story A Christmas Carol (1843). It is about the residents of a Berlin apartment building who are forced to spend Christmas Eve together in the only habitable penthouse of their grumpy landlord Dr. Wagner, played by Günther Maria Halmer , against his will.

The ARD Degeto commissioned production was realized by AllMedia Pictures for Das Erste and shot from December 2006 to January 2007 in Berlin , primarily in the Wilmersdorf district . In addition to Halmer, Jutta Speidel , Kyra Mladeck , Johanna-Christine Gehlen , Oliver Mommsen , Justus Kammerer , Lucas Gregorowicz and Hyun Wanner appeared in front of the camera of the ensemble film . It was first broadcast on December 7, 2007 during prime time on Erste. TV critics rated the production largely positive, both for its staging and for its presentation.

action

The grumpy and unsympathetic lawyer Dr. Wagner is equally unpopular with his colleagues and neighbors. When he comes home from his office on Christmas Eve, the plumber has just finished a change in the bathroom of his penthouse that Wagner wanted . While he is relaxing on a jog in the city, a catastrophe happens in his bathroom. A water pipe breaks and soaks all of the lower apartments in the multi-storey house he is renting. Most of his tenants left for the Christmas holidays. Only Rita Niemann and David Soost have to deal with this situation and decide without further ado to move to Wagner on the upper floor until their quarters are habitable again.

Dr. Wagner is not very enthusiastic, after all, he feels restricted in his privacy by his sudden subtenants and, moreover, prevented from working. But Rita and her family, as well as David and his friend Stevie, do not abandon the siege and make arrangements for Christmas Eve without Wagner's intervention. Even policemen who are called to help and alerted by the lawyer about trespassing can Rita “wrap around her finger”. Wagner is beside himself and continues to fear for his usual calm. Rightly so, because work is no longer an option. His neighbors set up a Christmas tree, take over the kitchen and Rita's grandson has even taken the hallway to play. Wagner flees headlong to the office and is horrified to discover that he cannot work here over the holidays because this time is used for a software update and he cannot use the computer system.

Back in his occupied apartment, he slowly begins to get involved in the new situation and learns to appreciate the advantages of a freshly cooked meal over his usual microwave meals. In addition, he gradually takes an interest in the worries of his tenants. Rita eagerly awaits a medical laboratory report and David has relationship problems with his friend Stevie, who wants to jump off the roof, which Wagner luckily prevents. When the courier finally arrives with the letter and Rita, happy about the good result for her, invites the messenger to have a glass of wine, it turns out that the young man is Wagner's son. The two had lost sight of each other since the death of Wagner's wife and Rita thinks that Christmas would be a good opportunity for the two men to talk to each other. This succeeds only with difficulty, just as Rita herself finally speaks to her mother. There is also a happy ending for Rita's daughter Sophia, because Wagner's son takes a liking to her and accompanies her home with her son.

criticism

Jutta Speidel's cast received positive reviews for his performance.

Tilmann P. Gangloff from Tittelbach.tv described the film as "a well-constructed, life-wise ensemble story" and compared the plot to Charles Dickens ' A Christmas Carol (1843). Oh Tannenbaum tell “a cheerful, heartwarming story with actors whom one likes to watch”. It continues: “The Christmas film, skilfully and easily staged by Matthias Tiefenbacher, thrives on the contrast between the Christmas phobic and his surroundings. It may be that the role is not a great challenge for Halmer, [...] but he plays this sullen sour pot just perfectly ”.

Josef Engels, editor at Die Welt , found that screenwriter Christoph Mattner "in an undoubtedly commendable effort not to warm up any reactionary TV kitsch, [...] has sprinkled a lot of the present into the script". Oh Tannenbaum is therefore a modern Christmas story with just such characters and without religious references. The production suffers optically “from a red cast - but when it comes to acting, director Matthias Tiefenbacher lets his actors use rather subtle colors. That is often very pleasant ”. According to Engels, Oh Tannenbaum only loses its balance after halfway through.

The TV Digital editorial team declared Oh Tannenbaum to be a “successful mixture of humor and seriousness” and, in addition to Halmer, especially emphasized the game by Jutta Speidel , Johanna Christine Gehlen and Oliver Mommsen . TV Today found the comedy to be "seasonal goods" and "tolerably sweet Christmas March ."

success

Oh Tannenbaum celebrated its first broadcast on December 7, 2007 in the first . With a market share of 17.4 percent and a total of 5.14 million viewers, the film advanced behind the RTL quiz show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? second most-watched prime-time production . In the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year olds, the market share was an above-average 10.4 percent. The film has been broadcast annually since then - sometimes by the third television programs . In 2011, during prime time on Christmas Eve, 2.28 million viewers tuned in to Das Erste.
