Oktavian Schmucki

Oktavian Schmucki OFMCap (born January 8, 1927 in Rieden SG as Viktor Schmucki ; † February 12, 2018 in Spital Schwyz ) was a Swiss Capuchin , author , religious historian and religious researcher .

Life

After graduating from high school in Appenzell, Viktor Schmucki joined the Capuchin Order in Lucerne in 1947 and was given the name Octavian . After studying philosophy and theology in Stans and Solothurn , he was appointed to Rome by the order general in 1952 and studied dogmatics and spirituality at the Pontifical Gregorian University from 1953 to 1959 . In 1959 he was with the work "The Passion of Christ in the life of St. Francis of Assisi" on the piety of Christ Italian saint doctorate . From 1956 to 1997 he worked as an order historian in the Historical Institute of the Capuchin Order in Rome, where he worked on around 350 scientific papers, some of them extensive, in four different languages, including Latin. In some of his publications, the author simply says “Octavian von Rieden”. From 1956 to 1996 he was a member of the Istituto Storico dei Cappuccini at the Collegio San Lorenzo da Brindisi and from 1972 to 1987 editor-in-chief of the magazine Collectanea Franciscan .

Since 1997 he has lived in the Wesemlin Monastery in Lucerne, where in recent years he has translated and commented on the first statutes of the Capuchin Order of 1536 and wrote a biography about Fidelis von Sigmaringen . The main works were the spirituality of the founder of the order, Francis of Assisi , of which he was a recognized researcher, and the history of the Capuchin order. Since 1997 he has also been the librarian of the German-speaking Capuchins.
