Olaf Hudtwalcker

Jürgen Olaf Hudtwalcker (born September 12, 1915 in Hamburg ; † April 23, 1984 in Barcelona ) was a German gallery owner and jazz journalist.

Life

Hudtwalcker comes from an old Hamburg merchant family. His father was Heinrich Carl Hudtwalcker, his grandfather Heinrich Hudtwalcker . During his studies in Berlin (1935 to 1941) he was a member of the local (illegal) Hot Club , and in 1937 a member of the Hot Club de France . After 1945 Hudtwalcker was very committed to jazz through lectures and articles. In 1947 he became chairman of the Hot Club Frankfurt am Main and from 1948 designed jazz programs for the Hessischer Rundfunk .

Together with the chairmen of other hot clubs , in particular Dieter Zimmerle from Stuttgart, Dietrich Schulz-Köhn from Cologne and Hans Blüthner from Berlin, he sent a circular to the German hot clubs in the winter of 1949/50 to identify possible contents and goals of a merger of jazz initiatives formulate; this is how the German Jazz Federation came into being , of which Hudtwalcker was president between 1955 and 1966. Since 1958 she had her secretariat in the Frankfurt old town house, which was rebuilt by Horst Lippmann, at Kleine Bockenheimer Str. 12 - so-called "Jazzhaus". From 1958 to 1965 Hudtwalcker's gallery for modern art was located in the same building .

In 1961 he took on a speaking role in Günther Weisenborn's radio play Harlem Ballade - The Story of Jazz Singer Billie Holiday . Hudtwalcker conducted the TV series Jazz for Young People on ARD . He then presented - from Barcelona - the Flamenco Gitano festival (including in the first year of 1965 with the dancer La Singla ).

Hudtwalcker was married to Irene Gauff (* 1928) and had a son Christian Andre (* 1956).
