Olena Lwiwna Kultschyzka ( Ukrainian Олена Львівна Кульчицька ; born September 15, 1877 in Bereschany , Galicia , Austria-Hungary ; † March 8, 1967 in Lviv , Ukrainian SSR ) was a Ukrainian graphic artist, painter and member of the Verkhovna Rada .

Life

Olena Kultschyzka was born in the east Galician city of Bereschany in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Ternopil . Between 1901 and 1903 she completed an art education in Lemberg and from 1903 to 1908 she studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts . After graduation, she traveled through France, England and Germany to familiarize herself with the artistic heritage and life of the countries of Europe. In 1909 she returned to Lemberg and exhibited her works there for the first time, very successfully. From 1910 to 1938 she taught at grammar schools in Przemyśl , where she was also one of the founders of the local museum of local history. During the 1920s and 1930s she illustrated more than seventy books and children's fables. From 1939 worked in the ethnographic department of the Museum of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv and from 1948 on, Kultschyzka was professor at the Faculty of Book Graphics of the Ukrainian Polygraphic Institute Ivan Fedorov .

Kultschyzka created a wide variety of works of art: painting, easel, graphics, book illustration and decorative art. She used various techniques for her graphics and created woodcuts, linocuts, copperplate engravings and etchings. Exhibitions of her numerous graphics and watercolors took place in Krakow, Poznan, Warsaw, Kiev, Poltava, Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Rome, Toronto, Helsinki and Chicago. She died at the age of 89 in Lviv and was buried there in the Lychakiv Cemetery. In 1971 a museum dedicated to her and her work was opened in Lviv.

Honors

A street is named after her in the center of Ternopil .
