Oliver Matz

Oliver Matz (born March 31, 1962 in Rostock ) is a German ballet dancer and director of the Zurich Dance Academy .

Life

Oliver Matz comes from Rostock . He received his ballet training from Martin Puttke at the State Ballet School in Berlin . In 1980 he was engaged to the German State Opera Berlin , where he became solo dancer in 1985 and first solo dancer two years later.

Choreographers and roles

The role work with Mikhail Baryshnikov , Rudolf Nurejew and Patrice Bart was particularly formative . His repertoire included the main roles of classical ballets such as Sleeping Beauty , Swan Lake , The Nutcracker , Giselle , La Bayadère , La Sylphide , Raimonda and title roles by Spartacus and Macbeth . His Balanchine repertoire included The Prodigal Son, Apollon musagète , Symphony in C , Theme and Variations, and The Four Temperaments . He was particularly known for his interpretations of the John Cranko ballets Onegin and The Taming of the Shrew .

Guest appearances

In 1988 Matz made a guest appearance at the Metropolitan Opera as Basilio in Don Quixote. In this role he also appeared several times with the Royal Ballet in London .

He had other engagements at La Scala in Milan . a. in Nurejew's Swan Lake , and was a permanent guest dancer with the Bavarian State Ballet in Die Große Fuge, Schwanensee, Don Quixote, La Sylvide and in John Cranko's ballets The Taming of the Shrew as Petruccio and in Onegin in the title role. He was also a regular guest at the Stuttgart Ballet . In 1995 and 1997 he was invited to the World Ballet Festival in Japan .

International guest performances and gala events led him a. a. to Moscow , Warsaw , London ( Covent Garden ), Rio de Janeiro , New York (Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center ), San Diego , Athens , Milan , Toronto , Tokyo , Marseille , Helsinki , Seville and Beijing .

His partners included Steffi Scherzer , Eva Evdokimova , Isabelle Guérin, Sylvie Guillem , Evelyn Hart, Margaret Illmann and Alessandra Ferri .

Farewell to the stage

In 2004 Matz ended his artistic career and received honorary membership of the German State Opera Berlin. From 2004 to 2007 he was in charge of the dance department at the Zurich University of Music and Theater and was appointed overall director of the Zurich Dance Academy when the Zurich University of the Arts was founded . There he continues to work as a lecturer. His students have won prizes at renowned national and international ballet competitions.
