Oliver von Dobrowolski (* 1976 as Oliver Scheunemann in Berlin-Lichterfelde ) is a German police officer and politician. He is the federal chairman of the Police Green Association.

Police career

Von Dobrowolski began his studies in 1998 to train for the higher service of the Berlin police .

As a result, he worked in various criminal investigation departments and in permanent crime service, before he was used for a few months in a police mission abroad in Afghanistan in 2011 . Furthermore, von Dobrowolski has been a member of the communications team of the Berlin police as a conflict manager since 2006 .

Since 2012 he has been employed by the State Criminal Police Office in Berlin, where he first worked for the Central Office for Prevention u. a. was responsible for the phenomenon of bicycle theft . After brief assignments in a hundred of the riot police, at the police academy and in the organized crime department of the LKA, he has been working in the focus and presence unit of the City Police Department in downtown Berlin since the beginning of 2020.

He has the rank of chief detective .

Political activity

Oliver von Dobrowolski has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since 2011 .

Since 2013 he has been a board member of the PoliceGrün association founded and registered in Freiburg im Breisgau , which sees itself as a police interest group for members of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen and people close to the party.

He has been the association's 1st chairman since March 2018.

Positions

Von Dobrowolski is committed to a tolerant, cosmopolitan and self-critical civil police.

An article published on his private blog “The G20 in Hamburg from the perspective of a police officer”, in which he critically examines the circumstances of the summit held in July 2017 in the Hanseatic city , received extensive attention.

Oliver von Dobrowolski speaks regularly in the media on issues of domestic and security policy. In addition to assessments of the G20 in the context of a civil rights-friendly police force, he is particularly concerned with the aspects of the introduction of independent police officers, irrational fear of crime as well as racial profiling and right-wing extremism in the police.

He has already published a column in the daily newspaper " Neues Deutschland ", which deals with the mandatory identification of the police . In an interview with the “ SZ-Magazin ” he countered the efforts to tighten the police laws and a more robust police force with the motto “We have to work with trust, not with a crowbar”.

In 2018 he was an interview guest in the well-known podcast formats " WRINT " by Holger Klein and "Frisch an die Arbeit" by ZEIT-Online .

Furthermore, he can be seen in the movie “Hamburg Grid”, released in 2018, in which he again takes a critical look at the commitment to the G20 summit.

Controversy

In April 2015, von Dobrowolski resigned from the police union (GdP) after 17 years of membership . The reason was, in his opinion, inadequate demarcation of the Berlin regional association from a board member, who in the past attracted attention due to its right-wing extremist sentiments. Shortly afterwards, Berlin's then police chief Klaus Kandt declared his resignation from the GdP for the same reason.

In January 2017, von Dobrowolski and others initiated an online petition in which the media in Germany were called on to give the chairman of the German Police Union , Rainer Wendt , less recognition and rather to rely on other police experts. It was argued that Wendt would damage the reputation of the police and trust in the profession through controversial and populist statements and his media omnipresence. Right-wing conservative newspapers and platforms in particular were outraged by this allegedly undemocratic attempt to curtail freedom of expression.

In April 2018, von Dobrowolski published an April Fool's joke on his Twitter account , according to which the then vacant post of police chief in Berlin had been given to the controversial G20 chief of operations of the Hamburg police, Hartmut Dudde .

As a private person, Hartmut Dudde lodged a complaint against von Dobrowolski with the police chief Barbara Slowik, who was transferred to the office shortly afterwards , because the allegation had hurt his honor.
