Olli Palola (born April 8, 1988 in Oulu ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Rögle BK from Svenska Hockeyligan (SHL) since August 2020 and plays there in the position of winger .

Career

Palola came from the offspring of the KeuPa HT Keuruu , where he was active up to the C-junior age. At the age of 15, the striker then moved to Ilves Tampere's junior division . There Palola played for four years and managed to make his debut in the SM-liiga with the professionals via the club's A-Juniors . There he came to six missions in the 2006/07 season , he also ran six times for the Finnish U20 national ice hockey team in the second-rate Mestis .

Nevertheless, Palola moved in the summer of 2007 to the league competitor Lukko Rauma , where he continued to be used in the A-youth in the following two seasons, but was also used sporadically in the SM-liiga. It was only in the 2009/10 season that he succeeded in gaining a permanent place among the professionals. The following year he played for Rauma in over 40 games. His yield with only five goals and eight assists in 105 top division games up to then remained meager. In the course of the season and beyond, there were short loans to Hokki Kajaani , Kisa Lempäälä and Vaasan Sport - all of them based in the second-class Mestis - before he was finally transferred to Tappara Tampere in October 2011 .

Even in his first season there, the breakthrough was still a long time coming, so he spent the 2012/13 season again over long periods on loan at Kisa Lempäälä. Nevertheless, he celebrated the Finnish runner-up title at the end of the season. The 2013/14 season was extremely successful. So Palola was able to celebrate the runner-up title with Tappara again and he won the prestigious Aarne Honkavaara trophy for the league's best goalscorer with 27 goals this season in 60 games . Previously, he had only 14 goals scored in 186 appearances in the elite class. The following season he was able to win this trophy again, this time with 29 goals. He then moved to Vitjas Podolsk from the Continental Hockey League , but was only used in 27 KHL games. In May 2016 he therefore moved to the Svenska Hockeyligan for Växjö Lakers HC , where he scored 52 points in 58 games this season. He then returned to the KHL when he signed a contract with Jokerit .

From May 2018 the Finn was under contract with Kunlun Red Star before he moved to Sweden again in August 2020 and joined Rögle BK from Svenska Hockeyligan.

International

Palola represented his home country for the first time at the 2014 World Cup in the Belarusian capital Minsk at a major international tournament. Previously, he had already made his first appearances in the national dress at the Channel One Cup 2013 as part of the Euro Hockey Tour 2013/14 .
