In the French capital Paris during the World Fair ( Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Paris ) discharged international competitions for Physical Education and Sport (Concours Internationaux d'Exercices physiques et de Sports) included two competitions in golf . The International Olympic Committee (IOC) assigned these competitions to the program of the 1900 Summer Olympics (Games of the Second Olympiad) .

Remarks

At the time, golf was a highly respected sport in high society and among the nobility. Even if cash prizes were already advertised at the golf tournaments at that time, the players were all considered amateurs, because nobody had to earn a living with them. So it should be understood that as early as 1912 the IOC, in order to come to terms with the history of the first five Olympic Games, made the decision to regard golf as an Olympic sport at the time.

The first golf tournament for women was held as early as 1810, and 33 years before the Olympic Games in 1900 there was already the first all-women golf club. It was therefore not unusual to have a competition for women only in Paris. Nevertheless, it was a significant event for the history of the Olympic Games.

The competitions took place on October 2nd and 3rd. The venue was the Société du Sport golf course in Compiègne , a town 80 km north of Paris. The course had nine holes. The importance that the organizers had attached to this golf tournament was also demonstrated with the awarding of the awards. The winner was the only competition to be honored with a gold plaque. The runners-up up to the fifth received a gold, a silver, a silver and a bronze plaque. A total of 22 players from 4 nations took part in the two competitions.
