Walter Jansen (Bishop)

Walter Jansen (born June 15, 1923 in Neuss ; † January 29, 2004 in Cologne ) was auxiliary bishop in Cologne.

Life

Jansen was born the youngest of three sons and comes from the Neuss parish of St. Marien . After graduating from high school in 1942, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a medic . After he fled from Soviet captivity in 1945 , he began studying theology in Bonn and was ordained a priest on July 15, 1951 . Initially a chaplain in Cologne-Porz - Urbach , in 1953 he became a pastor in the Uelzen refugee camp . Since 1960 city youth pastor and chaplain at Bonn Minster , he became pastor in Remscheid - Lennep that same year , where he became dean in 1970 . Since 1975 pastor at Bonn Minster, he was also city dean of Bonn until 1983 and in 1976 he was " Chaplain of His Holiness " ( Monsignor ), in 1978 papal honorary prelate and in 1983 honorary canon of Cologne.

For of 19 May 1983 titular bishop of Barica and auxiliary bishop appointed in Cologne, donated to him on June 19, archbishop of Cologne, Cardinal Joseph Hoffner in Cologne Cathedral , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Auxiliary Bishop Augustinus Frotz and Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen von Hildesheim . At the same time the cathedral capitular in Cologne , Jansen was also episcopal vicar for the orders and as auxiliary bishop for the pastoral district of Mitte (city of Cologne). After he was relieved of duty as auxiliary bishop on June 15, 1994, he devoted himself to pastoral care of the “old” priests of the diocese. He was buried on February 6, 2004 at his own request in the cloister of Bonn Minster.

His brother was the Cistercian abbot Klaus Jansen .
