The men's 10,000-meter walk at the 1948 Olympic Games in London was held at Wembley Stadium on August 3 and 7, 1948 . 19 athletes took part. This discipline was included in the Olympic program for the first time since 1924 .

The Olympic champion was the Swede John Mikaelsson ahead of his compatriot Ingemar Johansson . Fritz Schwab from Switzerland won bronze .

The walkers completed two preliminary rounds on August 3rd, from which the five best walkers qualified for the final, which took place on August 7th.

The course of the race was controlled by ten referees under the British head referee FW Blackmore. Among them were the Briton William Palmer , who had reached the Olympic 10,000 meter walking final in Stockholm in 1912 , Gordon Goodwin , the Olympic champion of 1924 in Paris , also British and the Italian Giorgio Oberweger , who won the bronze medal in the discus throw in 1936 would have.

The clear favorite for gold was the Swede Werner Hardmo, who had set a total of 25 unofficial world records on various walking distances in the previous years . However, Hardmo was disqualified in the final. His compatriot John Mikaelsson, who had already set a new Olympic record in the preliminary round , won the final by over half a minute.
