The men's individual archery competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was held from August 5 to August 12, 2016 in the Sambodromo . 64 athletes took part.
An athlete from Germany took part in this competition. The German Florian Floto was eliminated in the round of 16 against the eventual Olympic champion. No athletes from Switzerland, Liechtenstein or Austria took part in the competition.
In the final, Ku Bon-chan from South Korea defeated French Jean-Charles Valladont . In the duel for the bronze medal, the American Brady Ellison prevailed against the Dutchman Sjef van den Berg , who had to be satisfied with the ungrateful fourth place.
The individual archery competition is divided into two sections. The first part is the placement round, which forms the basis for the subsequent knockout round . Each shooter has a total of 72 arrows and these are shot at the target. All points are added together and the ranking list is created using this. Records can also be set in this part of the competition and before the 2016 Summer Olympics the following records were current:
The second part is the elimination round, which is carried out in the knockout system. Four groups are formed. The pairings of the archers resulted from the previous placement round, the first placed against the archer in 64th place, the second placed against the archer in 63rd place and so on. Each shooter shot a series of three arrows. The winner of the series received two points and one point in the event of a tie. A maximum of five series were shot. The shooter, who first scored six points, moved into the second round, then into the eighth, quarter and semi-finals, as well as the final or the duel for the bronze medal. If it was still a draw after five series, a decisive shot was fired that decided between victory and defeat.
